Thanks Pat. Any idea who was playing on the team?

Keeper7, I look up articles and I found out Longford won that year in an article. If I can find it again, Ill post the names of the players, maybe what they scored and where they were from.

link Thats a report of the match. If I remember correctly it wasn't as one sided as the report suggests, it was close up to half time and the injury to the longford keeper was a huge blow.

Interestingly, 13 of the starting team came from clubs that don't exist now and there wasnt a single edgeworthstown player on the team.

Interesting, alright! Thanks for that, Pat. Pity what happened to the Cuchulainns club. I understand that Slashers (who won the minor championship last year) should be returning to senior competition in the near future.

Pity alright, Cuchulainns used to compete in Roscommon also winning multiple B championships at u-14, u-16 and minor and losing several A championship semi finals to Athleague and Four Roads and when you consider Slashers competed very well with teams like Castletown Geoghegan who won minor championships later on, Longford hurling should have been in rude health however i think only 4-5 of these players are still playing hurling.

As for the team that lost that final i think one of the main reasons it fell apart was the change from playing the championship as single matches to a blitz format, which meant that all the summers hurling was condensed into one day. Its very hard to sustain interest when lads were being rang the night before these blitzes also.

Another problem was that the hurling co-ordinator at the time fell out with the county board and most of the players at the time.

Pat,

When a certain Garda moved to Roscommon the bottom fell out of the Cuchulainns club, unfortunately.

Yes, the blitz format has changed the nature of these B & C competitions & probably devalued them. Juveniles & minors are young adults & want to play proper matches.

I know only too well what happened to cuchulainns. Around 2004/2005 was Cuchulainns, Clonguish, Slashers, Edgeworthstown, Ballymahon, Killoe and Drumlish competing in the u-14 championship so it wasn't only one club that fell apart.

I think the problem is most clubs are run by a couple of individuals who are expected to coach every team from u-8 to senior, its just not sustainable.

The All Ireland C in 1998 was between Armagh and Cavan if I remember correctly with Armagh winning. That was the grade just above me at the time and some of my club-mates were on the Cavan team that lost. If it's not that year, then it was very soon around it but Cavan were definitely in a C All-Ireland final around that time.

That's it in a nutshell, Pat.

Sligo won the all Ireland 'C' competition in 2012. They played Donegal and Tyrone in the final. (It was played in a very strange round robin format)

Yeah, Sligo won the Under-16 'c' in 2012 and the Under-14 'c' in 2011, was there many players on the Under-14 team that went onto the Under-16 team?

In 2010 the U14 'C' 2010 beat Sligo in the final. In 2011 Sligo beat Tyrone in the final. In last year's U16 Sligo drew with Donegal but won the competition on score difference. Both Sligo & Donegal have put a lot into underage hurling the last few years & now have about 10 juvenile clubs each. Longford usually finished 3rd (out of 8) yet still has only 2 or 3 clubs (last year Clonguish failed to field at U12, U14 & U16 level).

I am certain Wicklow contested several All Ireland U16 B Finals in these years. They won an All Ireland C against Sligo in the 2000s.

Wicklow defeated Sligo in the Minor C Hurling championship final on a scoreline of Wicklow 5-16 Sligo 2-2. August 2011.

Wicklow have never won the Under-16 'B', but with some of the finals I am missing in the 'C', they very well could have.
They did win a few Minor 'C', 1967 (The first ever Minor 'C' final) against Down and as you said 2011 also :P
They have won 3 Under-14 'C' hurling alright, 1996, 2007 and 2008.

Our Lory Meagher winning team in 2010 was backboned by players from our 2 minor All-Ireland 'C' winners. The hope is that we'd win another minor title next year or in 2015 to try to bridge the gap to our current senior team
