Kilkenny V Waterford

(Oldest Posts First)

All the bookies have Kilkenny as clear favourites. Will the three games in three weeks count against Waterford? How do you see this one going?

I think Waterford have progressed this year and will beat Kilkenny on Saturday. Credit to Liam Cahill and his team. Kilkenny are a shadow of their former selves and they still beat Galway, Galway struggled to beat a poor 14 man Tipp team. Limerick will beat Galway by at least 7 points on Sunday.

Waterford all day. KK relying on Reid and Hogan to carry them along!

I think Kilkenny will have to play very well to beat Waterford. 3 games in 2 weeks is a tall order but, Waterford looked very strong closing out Clare. One thing we know Kilkenny will bring everything they have always do under Cody and Waterford will have to match that if they don't Kilkenny will win by a few points.

My worry is Colin Fennelly and Walter Walsh will be like two wounded Cats (in every sense of the word) after last week, being taken off. Brian Cody knows the buttons to push and I bet he plays both. On the plus side for Waterford Conor Gleeson and Montgomery are now ready but no word on Shane Fives. Should be an interesting game.

It's going to be a great game Kilkenny always play well against Waterford and Waterford have shown a bit of steel I haven't seen in a long time I think it is 50 50

An awful lot of cracks papered over in the Kilkenny win against Galway

If they play at 10 and 14 then Waterford have the players to match them I think. Its the game after game that will be tough for Waterford.
I said after the Munster final that Hutchinson had a good game but with a sharper touch and more confidence that he would have had a great game. We seen the last day that hes getting better game by game at this level and from a Waterford perspective theyll hope to see the same from him again. I expect huge games from Barron and Moran (as uaual) - two absolute warriors and a joy to watch.

Deiseboy36 I thought I was the only Waterford poster on the planet. Nice to see someone else keeping an eye on things. All teams interest is great.

Indeed it is and is noticable how respectful in general hurling posters are. Last weeks Galway Tipperary thread was a pleasure to read with ,for the most part ,contributions from people who have a genuine interest in the game as a whole and not just their own counties

Best of luck to Waterford hurlers. Would love to see them win an All Ireland.

Good luck to Waterford. I remember as a young listening to the 1959 drawn and Replayed Finals. That Waterford team were my heroes then. If Limerick do not win it out I hope Waterford does.

I was deemed too young to be brought in'59 and '63. My most vivid memory was a tournament game that were very common then. Philly Grimes took five 21yds frees with the goal lined and scored them. Franky Walsh then took over took another four and scored. Nine from placed balls. It was not uncommon to see Grimes race toward goal put his hand back and catch a pass behind his back from Seamus Power. Memories.

A lot of talk from ex players about the weakness in the Waterford full back line. Maybe they are right. Time will tell. They are young for sure and Shane Fives is a big loss if not available. Prunty is 23 and will be a big name full back in time. I am sure Liam Cahill will work on support for them.

Wouldnt it be great to see Waterford prevail here and reach the All Ireland...I have always had a soft spot for them after Cork gave the two woeful trimmings back in 82 & 83..I was only 12 at the time and remember those defeats destroyed Waterford for many years to come...they had some nice hurlers during their barron years, I wont start naming them here...Waterford need to match Kilkenny hurling and physically, and I think they have both, being Kilkenny, they will need to be a little off par or Waterford get the rub of the green instead of Kilkenny and Waterford might just get over the line...the puruists of course will want Kilkenny to win for whatever reason (they have won enough as far as I am concerned) Kilkenny will be physical of course, but in the last few years are not getting away with some of the so called "boderline" stuff they got away with at their peak, that is not to say they were exceptional during them years, but some of the helmet tugs, hurl into the face guards, Seamus Hickeys "taking out" at start of 2007 AI final..Tipp having them on the ropes I think in 2009 early in 2nd half, and a clear line ball to Tipp missed by linesman, TIpp made the fatal mistake of not playing the whilstle, Kilkenny played on the ball was moved up the field and a Kilkenny goal was scored, lights out...any neutral will want a Waterford win here...I think Waterford have more scoring forwards to win here, despite Kilkenny having TJ Reid on form, and we can expect Walter Walsh and Colin Fennelly to be fired up this week after being taken off last week...
