Well I hope that puts to rest the rhetoric that the provincial championships are a waste of time. As a Donegal man I'm disappointed, but delighted also for Cavan. I think today shows that the problem isn't the provincial championships, rather a crazy system that gives the big teams several second chances. Time to get rid of super 8s and maybe the qualifiers also. DL_Man (Donegal) - Posts: 89 - 22/11/2020 18:52:15 2313155 Link 6 |
Keep Ulster, Munster and Connaught. Ulster and Connaught are always great. Scrap the qualifiers, the super 8s. Scrap Leinster as it's a waste of everybody's time. Or have Leinster as a standalone B championship without Dublin. The winners of this B championship dont have access to the all ireland series but the winners of this can then choose whether to play the Dubs or not for a place in an all ireland semi final or to not bother with the inevitable hiding. Crackpot idea, yes but no more ridiculous than the stupid 8s. Daith (Kildare) - Posts: 1126 - 22/11/2020 19:22:18 2313222 Link 0 |
Could give Dublin a bye to a final or something along those lines, although I think the leinster teams themselves have to take responsibility. The standard of leinster counties, bar the Dubs, is attrocious. 10 or 15 years ago we had competitive teams from kildare, meath, louth, wexford etc. Now none of those counties are anywhere near the top table, bar Meath very maybe

Set up a North Leinster Football provincial championship, with Meath, Louth Longford, Offaly and Westmeath along with Fingal and Dublin City. In the south leinster championship you have all the remaining Leinster teams plus South Dublin and Dun Laoighire/Rathdown. There will be then 5 provincial winners and have a premlinary all Ireland quarter final. It's time to split Dublin up and the most natural way is the county council boundaries. It will help the gas in Dublin aswell as there is more chance of good lads making the county team Updlocal (Meath) - Posts: 4 - 22/11/2020 19:53:16 2313288 Link 2 |

Why dont we send Galway back to Connaught in the hurling and restart that championship. Sure its up to sligo and leitrim to get to that level. daytona11 (Kildare) - Posts: 3772 - 22/11/2020 20:00:15 2313301 Link 4 |
but would. you have a problem when Meath, with a population of nearly 200K play poor old Longford with a population of 40K????

I agree, the rest of Leinster is languising and falling further behind, standard is very poor.

The standard in the rest of Leinster is on a par of a Ulster, Munster or Connaught. To say Kildare or Meath wouldnt be a match for Tipp or Cavan isnt true. The issue in Leinster is for the most part one team has benefited in areas we havent and this is the result. daytona11 (Kildare) - Posts: 3772 - 22/11/2020 20:07:43 2313319 Link 2 |
kilkenny have won 73 hurling titles, dublin about 60 football, for most of the last 100 years at best they might have one team to challange them, dublin, wexcford offaly and now galway give them a game, but i never heard anyone wanting to do away with the hurling cship Stmunnsriver (Wexford) - Posts: 1925 - 22/11/2020 20:09:41 2313327 Link 2 |
Like I said in another thread last week just put dublin in an eternal allireland final and let the rest of us play a championship to see who gets to play them, then have them tour 6 different counties every year like the barbarians do in Rugby.

Then what's your solution? something has to be done. If you take a look at the premiership, big cities have 4 or 5 teams. London has spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham. What about all the good Dublin club players who would be on most county teams not getting within an asses roar of the current Dublin team.

Ulster, Connacht and Munster are great championships.....The only issue is Dublin and the other Leinster counties suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1377 - 22/11/2020 20:13:59 2313338 Link 1 |
Scrap the leagues, nobody cares about them. Play the provincials in their place. Then open draw all ireland. Youll get the sheer drama of days like today and the provincials will still have a place. No qualifiers or super 8s, they dilute what is best about championship football. Finally. Promote dublin to their own special one team division so Meath dont have to play them for 10 years.. This sounds suspiciously like the old province of Meath?

It was a fantastic day for football galwayfball (Galway) - Posts: 1209 - 22/11/2020 20:28:38 2313363 Link 5 |
Can we put Dublin in Connaught for those 5 years or rotate them around the provinces?

3 of the provinces are alive and well in spite of talk about abolishing them and creating a token 2nd tier championship. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8583 - 22/11/2020 20:40:59 2313387 Link 0 |
You dont need to play every competition to completion before the next starts. What does scrapping the leagues actually do? Why does removing the overwhelming majority of games at inter county level help the inter county game? Removing all these games from the calendar would be great for soccer and rugby and all other sports as you are removing so much from the biggest advertisements for the gaa ie the inter county game. People complain about the media coverage gaa gets now. it would be 50 times less with your idea for the gaa calendar KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 1636 - 22/11/2020 20:47:16 2313398 Link 0 |
