What's he supposed to do though, not go for the ball? It was clumsy at worst. Johnny Murphy did a good job cutting out Paudie Maher's and a few others "theatrics", and did have a good game in general. Referees need to stop throwing out yellow cards so easily. No need for a black card, as a player I would hate it. An automatic penalty for a goal-scoring opportunity and a 10-minute sin bin. We got good training on it last week in both codes. Good to see we're not slow-learners. :)

Re Barrett, he was supposed to go for the ball in controlled manner, not bring his girl down on his opponent's head. I'd say it was clumsy at best and completely wreckless from an experienced intercounty player. Re the black card, a 10 minute sin bin is the current punishment. What exactly are you arguing against? I would have to agree with you. The problem is if that first one is a soft one. Now the next one is deserved and a team down a man. You could see how it effected young Prunty today but the sign of an up and coming great is how he recovered. He was lucky not to be sent off. The first one was weak and he could have got a second easily. It should be definitely be given if a goal scoring chance is taken away and not just on a fight for the ball. The first choice is not for the referee to take away the scoring chance by blowing up as has happened a few times. All in all the refs are doing a good job and can only employ the rules as directed. Sometimes professional fouls are done but I can also see managers telling players to back in to the full back and invite a foul and then do it again. I prefer any of your alternatives and believe the only reason a player should be thrown out of the game is for deliberate hitting with stick, kicking and injuring an opponent. Hardly. Looked like he got him on the shoulder to me and I would consider it a harsh red. Its possible that any other defender other than Barrett might have got away with it

Exactly. Not for a second disputing the yellow but anyone that has played in the back has done that multiple times every season. Wasn't dangerous but a yellow none the less

I wouldn't be overly critical of sheedy at all. There was on massive mistake and that was playing omeara at 5 when he had Flynn further up the field. Mannions goal was way too soft. OMeara did hurl a lot of ball but a big ask of him to go back there at intercounty level for the first time the last two games. Someone already mentioned loughmores run probably hampered the two McGrath's which is possible too but overall I'm proud how the team done. They weren't far off tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 2911 - 21/11/2020 18:59:23 2312135 Link 3 |
I hate this kind of thing as it puts a cloud over what should be a great win. Sigh.

Surprise nobody has mentioned the Biggest talking point of the Game. In the second half Liam sheedy had confronted the linesman, right into his face. Sheedy had no mask. heartbroken (Galway) - Posts: 356 - 21/11/2020 19:22:01 2312152 Link 4 |
Good win by Galway. They were 6 down in the second half, but put over the points. Aidan Harte's goal clinched it. Repeat of 2018 final the next day.

Barrett was unlucky with the first yellow but Jake Morris was lucky to be still on the field after 26.50 minutes. He was on a yellow and clipped Cathal Mannion at the back of the head after Mannion had struck the ball. Mannion was on the ground in distress. The commentator with Ger Canning, an ex-Tipp player, said there was no intent! Whether there was intent or not, it was very dangerous play. We all know these days the serious effects such blows to the head have in later years. Nobody wants to see players been sent off but for dangerous play, esp hits to the head there should be one clear message to stamp it out. Brian Concannon missed the 2018 All Ireland senior final for a less dangerous strike in an U21 match.

I wouldn't pay much heed to the commentator. He's shocking at that job and yes I agree Morris was lucky. Although Concannon is no angel but I don't clearly remember that incident from a few years ago

I thought Morris was lucky myself as he clearly hit the Galway player in the helmet, although I do wonder are helmets at inter county softer than club ones - tiny tap on the helmet is now roll to the ground, holding the helmet, helmet off, physio on. Although it never happens in the closing stages when the side is losing......... StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 864 - 22/11/2020 16:01:05 2312854 Link 2 |
Look be careful you don't get what you ask for. Not commenting directly on any of these incidents. Hurling is a contact sport played with a stick and inevitably someone is going to get clipped without intent or necessarily careless play. These early yellow cards are pragmatic to say the least and put the referee in a terrible situation. If the player farts again he is gone off. The gap between the first yellow and what gets him dismissed can be too severe. I believe a player should only be dismissed for intentional striking an opponent. These ones are not as subjective as people say. Careless play should be dealt with some other way. May be a penalty box or a black card. Not a great supporter of black cards either as it turns our games into valentines day. I think the professional foul dragging down a player should be a penalty shot if there is no other defender between the attacker and goal irrespective on how far out it is. If the same player does it again straight red. Why? Because if you give him a yellow and he commits some minor offence that is what he is getting dismissed for. If he pulls down an attacker twice to stop a score he deserves to be sent off.

I'm not wishing for anything but player safety and welfare. Nobody wants any player from any county to end their days with Parkinson's, dementia or any other degenerative disease.

I wouldnt be in full agreement with you . It looked to me as if Morris had attempted to hook Mannion and followed through with his hurl whether intentionally or not. Either way it wasnt much more than a tap and if Cathal was in distress then it was more of a reflection on him. The problem with stamping it out with red cards is that players are purposely dropping their heads and inviting or forcing the opponents hurl up to make contact with their helmet to draw a free and then compounding it by going down and pulling off same helmet. Whats more they are being coached to do so and thats from first hand knowledge. The game is rife with it at the minute and in my (humble )opinion its a blight on the game. Maybe I'm old fashioned but there was a time when deliberately drawing fouls and hitting the deck was'nt acceptable and hurling was better for it
