John Kiely Comments

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'm with Killingfields on this, very strongly.

The government has more important interest groups to think about right now than the panel members of inter county teams.

We're going through a pandemic ffs, only a few weeks ago we were at exponential growth again and there were once again fears that our hospitals would be overloaded.

We have to just accept that there have to been restrictions, they're not going to be perfect because it takes time to get things perfect which we often don't have.

People need to get out of their own life experience and every minor inconvenience and just realise there's nothing ideal about any of this.

There's been very good news on the vaccine front over the last couple of weeks, hopefully there's light at the end of the tunnel.

We'll all continue to have to deal with disruption in life for a while but it just needs to be sucked up.

Kiely's comments are indicative of a moaning attitude to restrictions, they are harmful to the wider discourse around the restrictions.

Not every restriction is perfect. We need restrictions. Just get on with it.

How is it a ridiculous comparison? That its their job means they even more should be allowed in as theyre employees and it isnt terrible. Its just part and parcel of life in a time where thousands have died.
If you are not needed to let game take place then you dont travel

Yes the media are important to transmit the ganesbut people who are not working are left in and players are not. Ex players that write newspaper columns should not be left in ahead of panel members. Also do you need all the reporters. Can they not write a report on the game from TV.the government made the rules but many are bending the rules. For example the Sunday fame pundits do Not need to attend the fame unless they are needed for the live programme.

The ex players are journalists and the column writers get their column material from attending games in person. they cant write them without being at games in person.
Each reporter is for a different organisation.
By all means have 26 players of a squad and 1/2 extra in case a players pulls up injured in warm up to allow you have a full bench but if you say let all these players in where do you stop? Who else do you let in?
Its fair to everyone. You are named in squad you can attend. If not you watch at home as if not involved in the game you are making a journey that isnt necessary in a time when we should be restricting movements"
Why can't ex players write their column without being at the game in person?"
Of course they can. Sure the write about a lot of games they don't attend. They are flouting the rules.

These 10 players journeyed to training last week and will again this week. If not allowing them go to the game is the answer to the virus then we have it beat. I have and do support restrictions to control the virus and realize the disruption to people's lives but this one is petty not allowing 10 players into a large stadium. They are travelling and with the rest of the players several times a week. John Kiely and other managers are not trying to oust or disrupt covid regulations. They are just looking to respect the contribution of all their panel. If the players decided in solidarity that we are all in or all out people on here would be screaming all sorts of things about them because we can not get our fix. This love the games but rain in the player amazes me. It sounds like a sense of entitlement from those who have nothing invested."
I hear what you're saying but it's just such a not important issue that it doesn't deserve to have time wasted on it.

Is it a perfect rule, far from it. Do we have the resources to make perfect rules or consider all the other repercussions of facilitating extra leeway for 1 interest group, definitely not.

Not going to change any minds on here as the stomp on the players brigade is alive and well. Waterford players who are on the panel will not see the game on Saturday because of the non availability of Sky. People around the world can watch it on GAAGO. This is disgusting to say the least.

I don't care if you change your mind or not.

I still think you're wrong and the moaning from the managers of these teams does my nut in to be honest.

We're living in a pandemic, they need to grow up.

That's also a very separate issue.

The media agreements are in the hands of the GAA and I hate what they've done with a passion.

Has no bearing though on what the government should do with regards the restrictions put in place.

It is a ridiculous comparison because professionals are compensated for their time with pay. GAA players are compensated by playing a game. The lads who are training every week only reward is to play or be part of their county in big games in Croke Park, Semple Stadium or any other big venue. Not going to worry about someone sitting home getting paid to watch a game. I do feel for someone who put in the time and is left out of the reward. Is this the biggest problem we are facing now absolutely not but, it is a small problem with an easy fix that would make things a bit better for some people.

It isnt a ridiculous comparison. That the players are paid doesnt mean they should be allowed in and its the same with amatuer players.
Yes they are training to play in big games but when we in a pandemic and limiting travel why should players be travelling just to sit in the stand. That is a perfect example of needless travel.
They are not being left out of the reward when the part of being in the stadium is with the crowd etc.
It isnt an easy fix.

Why do some people on here talk about the players like they are children. They are adults and I'm sure they understand the rules and aren't at home crying into mammy's bussom about having to watch the game on TV.

Also there isn't a young person in the country doesn't know a way to get a sky mix match on their laptop or whatever so don't be too worried about them

Hate what? The analysis on Sky is often better than RTÉ.

I hate that the rights were sold at all. I think it goes against the integrity of the games.

I've issues with the wider television rights industry and the exploitative nature of it.

I'm annoyed that the audience for games has roughly dropped by 90% from what similar games were getting on TV3.

I think it's overall worse for the association and the promotion of the games. The extra revenue we get doesn't appropriately factor in the cost externalities that we face.

The association misled us in terms of their plans to go down this route.

Yeah, imagine thinking a lad in his 20s hadn't got access to a laptop or a phone and Chromecast, or whatever.
Most young lads know what the current restrictions are about. That's life. Get on with it and stop the complaining.

You know it may not be a big thing in the big scheme of things. At least to the selfish people on here. There are more than the players involved who now you want to pay to watch the game. Maybe they should pay to play as well. I have elder family who just about know how to turn on the t.v. and are not going to do anything else but expect to see it on the national t.v. station. They have supported the GAA all their lives both the local club and county, travelling and buying tickets. They are obeying the travel distance regulation and want everyone they know to do like wise. It time some people would leave their own little cocoon and show some empathy toward others.

Some post on here reminds me that there are people who are begrudgers and probably put nothing into any thing. Just childish references to stupid analogies that have nothing to do with a discussion on if the whole panel of our GAA teams should be allowed into the games. You can agree or disagree but let's at least have an adult conversation and debate about it.

What does this have to do with players not being allowed to travel to a match. Players shouldn't be travelling to a game if they aren't needed. RTÉ can't put every game on TV and you'd have people complaining if it was aired in Irish on TG4. Virgin are more interested in rugby and soccer. You just need quit whining. And stop calling people selfish and bringing up stuff which will never happen (pay to play).

My grandparents are in their 80s and we're not able to go to games in 2018 or 2019 due to their health.

Did they get to see every game for free on TV in those years ?
