Ulster Final Donegal V Cavan

Replying To CiarraiMick:  "Im really enjoying this thread. While I miss the fact Kerry are gone sometimes as aneutral one can enjoy the banter and not get upset at any of the jibes or needle.Cavan are in the ulster final on merit and beat a fancied Monaghan team on route also.Obviously Breffni park would have suited Cavan better but im sure they still confident. However I just think Donegal have too much for them. However im sure Donegal will take nothing for granted with Bonner and the very astute Rochford. In 1992 Donegal won their first all Ireland outplaying ahotly fancied Dublin team in the final. They had a dogfight with Mayo in the semi but their toughest game was in the first round v Cavan which I think went to a replay. In 1997 Cavan won their last ulster titled managed brilliantly that year by Mairtin Mc Hugh so Cavan and Donegal have a lot in common. On the managers comments.Lots of managers nowadays try to get that edge with referees beforehand by putting ideas in their heads.maybe they copying Jim Gavin and Eamonn Fitzmaurice s template who did it a few times. On the Murphy issue.imo yes he can definitely take care of himself but I do think he s the victim most of the time tbh.I have seen him being pulled and dragged a lot and I do thinkalot of the big men find it harder to get frees.I saw in with Donaghy for years with Kerry.I saw in with Corkery with Cork.Aidan oshea Mayo and Connolly Dublin.on a few occasions I don't know how Murphykept his cool tbh.I look forward to the game and love watching Gearoid Mc Kiernan too.Best of luck to both teams."
In fairness Breffni would probably have suited us as well as it's a much better playing surface.

You're right in '92, we had a scare that first day out and the Wee Man scored a free from 50metres I remember towards the end, I can't remember if it was to draw the game or to nudge us in front and Cavan came back again. We won handily enough the second day out, I remember we had played Cavan I think the three years previous in Ulster as well, they were sick of the sight of us I'd say.

Well worth going down a youtube hole of highlights from those days to see Martin McHugh in his pomp.

Replying To TheFean:  "That hasn't happened since the 1950's. We have a Meath man in our ranks on Sunday which is a good omen for us as we had one in 1997 when we last won Ulster. (I'll clutch at any straw at this stage to get us past the yellow peril). Where will we play this old classic - Carnaross or Virginia? ?"
We beat Meath in the championship in 2005

I heard that Donegal wanted to play in Breffni. The surface is great and would suit them better so not surprised they'd want to go back there, even it being Cavans home ground. Ulster has a weird issue with neutral venues, Munster and Connacht regularly switch to different venues and rotate between opponents. Breffni the best pitch this time of year, mad they've relaid the Athletic grounds instead of a far easier solution in Breffni...

Just stating something that happened before another event. What's wrong with that? Be mad if it repeated though

The only hope really is Cavan start well cause anything else will be impossible to claw back. They've gotta push up on the kick out and hinder/halt the ball that comes through midfield. Even at that i suspect the Donegal bench might have something to say about that later in the game.

While Cavan have come from behind in the last 3 championship it was also the case in the last two league games against Kildare and Roscommon, although the final whistle came a little early. There is no doubt they have it in the tank and the mental strength and while i dont fully agree with it they have the capability to manage and not panic. So the task at hand will be to hang on to the coattails for as long as possible..

Replying To Lockjaw:  "A few lads here getting very sensitive, must be the times we live in.
The only thing that really matters are the players themselves. If Donegal players were belittling Cavan's chances in the press then I'd start to be worried. There is zero chance of that happening. If they go out and go about their business on Sunday with the right attitude and intensity then I'll be happy enough."
Hey now Lockjaw, don't be victim blaming :). A couple of Donegal posters are giving it the big I am and very blatantly showing us zero respect and we're understandably responding to that.

Ulster Council based in Armagh, a hometown call having the game in Armagh

That was a qualifier played in Clones - I'm referencing all Ireland semi finals.

I can see shades of 2013 already. Donegal are going to be complacent. Cavan are battle hardened and we've played the best football ball of the championship in the second halves of the Monaghan and Down games. They'll put together a solid 70 minutes and pip donegal. Wait till you see. Some of the donegal posters on this are dreaming.

If you're betting man you'll get 80/1 on a Meath, Cavan double.

In 1982 when Ireland played England in Twickenham, as the teams stood in the tunnel, Bill Beaumont the England captain said to his counterpart Ciaran Fitzgerald 'Good luck Fitzy, lets hope the best team wins, eh?'
To which Fitzgerald replied, 'Let's hope not Bill'.

Same as that for Sunday.

I just can't see it though. A Div 3 team against All Ireland contenders after all

Nothing is impossible. I think that the best team will win on the day. no excuses from me if we lose. I still fancy our chances, not going to be talking up the opposition and down our lads. leave that for other counties. Admittedly I have not seen much of cavan bar the highlights of their last 2 games. most impressive to come back v Monaghan. Similarly v Down. They look very physically strong and must be as fit as fiddles too. Let's see if they bring their scoring boots with them. If they do, we could be in for trouble.

Donegal are in great form but we have defensive problems with injuries and absentees so that's worrying from our perspective, up front we are spoiled for choice, playing lovely football and scoring at will, I can see Rochfords influence, I suppose the southern media will still be spewing the Donegal defensive football tripe,
Donegal by 4 or 5 points but we need to really concentrate on this one, fellas with wee ideas in the back of their heads about a big semi final against the Dubs could get caught out very handy, Cavan are no mugs."
Are you trolling or what?

Why are Donegal going to be complacent? Don't base the players' attitude from one fan on this website. The players will be focused. Getting very tetchy now, enjoy the weekend one way or the other.

Well done to cavan for getting to the final this year again.in all seriousness they are starting to see the successful u21 teams coming to the fore at senior level. I am sure donegal will win but what ulster needs is strong teams to push each other up and if these cavan lads keep that never say die attitude they will be a force. Fingers crossed it won't start tomorrow.

Don't think Donegal will be caught on the hop tomorrow. The vast majority of Cavan fans know whats coming tomorrow bar a total collapse by Donegal. We are leaky at the back with a soft centre and although we have decent forwards, we can be hot and cold. Our problem is that we can't consistently perform for 70+ minutes. Let's just hope the 15 lads that take to the field tomorrow believe and do themselves justice.
I think what most Cavan people on here are getting annoyed about is the way some Donegal people think they're some sort of juggernaut like Dublin but I'm afraid this is not the case.
Hoping for a good performance tomorrow and that we keep Donegal to 4 or 5 points as it could potentially be much worst
