Great win for down today whilst some people will see this as a set back for offaly I see it as a potential major turning point for down and Ulster hurling. ITSCHOLAR (Carlow) - Posts: 250 - 14/11/2020 20:47:36 2308904 Link 1 |
I agree but the reality is most people outside of these counties have no interest in the slightest. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 979 - 14/11/2020 20:55:15 2308914 Link 0 |
And even worse not enough within the counties have any interest either

I was delighted for Antrim, Mayo and Kildare today, however in fairness, today this thread was tailor made for the Down hurlers. To think Down brought Offaly a county with history and success at the highest level to extra time along with that their goal keeper Stephen Keith saving 3 penalties, to finish it off with an historic win that in itself is from the top drawer. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 2161 - 14/11/2020 21:46:24 2308952 Link 1 |
I'd love to watch them. I actually enjoy watching any game far more if my own county or club is not involved. When my county or club is involved, it's pure purgatory

As an Offaly man, i tried to point out to other posters on our GAA forum Uibhfaili.com last night (one was predicting Offaly would win by 15 points!!!) he hasnt surfaced tonight, maybe he is drinking 15 pints in a Shebeen somewhere...If anyone watched the Derry game last week, they would know Offaly were poor, hurled as individual, with only 4/5 players at most really playing to their own normal standards of high intensity and desire to to win, other so called big names, there for the sake of being "with the county" as they havent raised a puff in recent times...I hesiitantly gave Offaly a win on 1-22 to 1-17 score line...eyebrown were raised, I was being honest, and even at that I was wrong, but at least I knew Down would not bow to Offaly, they never have before and I knew Down would be out to get back up to JMCD as well, to some Offaly people it was "we will win the Christy RIng"...what they were basing that on I am still trying to establish but dont expect to have answers too soon, or ever...We are now down at a lower level, and that is where we will be for a fair few years from what I see....

This is the same Rte that go out of their way to show off their positive attitudes towards diversity, gender equality, etc. 97Cavans (Cavan) - Posts: 108 - 15/11/2020 12:12:27 2309091 Link 1 |
Carlow won the MacDonagh cup in 2018. Four group matches and then the final in Croke Park. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1187 - 15/11/2020 12:40:01 2309106 Link 1 |
Can't say I remember Offaly being anything other than a very poor side, but their current predicament makes my father a very sad man from a hurling perspective. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 864 - 15/11/2020 13:07:25 2309118 Link 0 |
Well said. How can we expect teams to make the step up (& then stay up) to a higher level when they get no recognition for their efforts? County boards can then justify treating their hurlers as 2nd class compared to their footballers because they are perceived as being lower profile & subsequently less important.

What's the point allowing these finals to be played in Croke Park (supposedly to promote the competitions) when the semifinals & previous rounds never even got a mention? keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 3868 - 16/11/2020 14:54:54 2310125 Link 0 |
Lower level sport never gets the same airtime as the interest from neutrals is just non existent. How many here would sit down and watch League two soccer on Sky or some of the lower division highlight shows they have on. sourmilk93 (Roscommon) - Posts: 565 - 16/11/2020 15:00:56 2310133 Link 2 |
I for one and probably more than you would think. Quest have the EFL show which covers from the Championship down and they show the highlights from EVERY game in each of the leagues. BBC and BT Sport have shown a lot of the FA Cup games already and from checking there are a lot more to come - they have no problem showing the likes of: Tranmere Rovers v Brackley Town Morecambe v Solihull Moors Peterborough United v Chorley etc etc etc So to say lower level sport never gets airtime is just incorrect. Antrim V Kerry, Down V Offaly is not "lower level sport". Why are club games shown or ladies football or camógie for that matter?

I think Offaly are a victim of their own past success. Offaly over achieved for years in both hurling and football. A county with a small population but an unbelievable love of gaelic games and in some ways, nothing else to occupy their time. I believe I am correct in saying that Offaly has had an All star award in most positions in hurling and football. Offaly are now, like a lot of other counties competing with changing demographics, a sport (both hurling and football) where finances matter far more than they ever did and a young population who dream of playing rugby for Leinster more than playing hurling and football for Offaly. Over the last 30 years, the GAA are moving closer and closer to the elite few - it happened a long time ago in hurling, in fact, I don't know why it is referred to the All Ireland championship as 80% of the teams don't compete in the All Ireland competition. Except for the pandemic, football would have a two tier competition but again, we all know that there are probably 5 teams in football who are capable of winning the primary competition. I think there needs to be a rethink about intercounty level right across the board if a revival is to happen and it isn't just in Offaly, one only has to look at the Leinster football championship to see what it has become. No, I think most GAA people believe that playing club games in the summer months when there is good weather and local rivalries is much more appealing than an intercounty championship confined to the elite few.

Saying its not the all ireland because many dont compete is nonsense. Its a tiered competition and where are you getting 80% from? By and large all through history most provinces havent been ridiculously competitive. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 1636 - 16/11/2020 16:43:40 2310211 Link 1 |
Most kids in Offaly are not growing dreaming of playing rugby for Leinster. Every county in hurling competes in an All-Ireland competition. Liam McCarthy: Senior Joe McDonagh: Senior B Christy Ring: Intermediate Nicky Rackard: Junior A Lory Meagher: Junior B Football needs a tiered championship. 2 at least. Maybe 3 like the ladies' game. Kerry and Dublin have always dominated the game. They have won 50% of the the titles. Weaker counties need to accept that can't compete against the top teams in the country.
