Imagine Armagh had an O Rourke, Harte or McGuinness

(Oldest Posts First)

It's incredible to me that Armagh are persisting for so long with McGeeney. For a county with such good footballers and proud tradition, progress has been so slow. And embarrassed today. Imagine Armagh had a Malachy O'Rourke or Mickey Harte or Jim McGuinness. He's not in the same league.

With this team, and any of those managers, Donegal would still beat them today.

Think that armagh side with a manager like malachy o rourke would be far superior than what they showed today which was v little.

Donegal were very good today. Why always bash the loser? Armagh have made progress. They are back in Division 1. Today was brutal right enough but they are going in the right direction. McGeeney is a proud Armagh man. Give him and the team another go. Some of the stuff that they did in the end were surely not in any game plan.

Mighty impressive alright - gonna take some stopping on that form.
It was a big score to put up.

Armagh were very poor today but hindsight is 20/20. Armagh are nowhere near winning an All Ireland and McGeeney is probably the right man for where they are at.

Exactly. He is doing a great job with the players he has. Armagh are div 1 next year if they can stay up for a couple of years to get those player battle hardened and used to the power and pace of the top table they will be a force again.

He's there 6 years though, and was part of the backroom team in 2014. They haven't really improved tactically under McGeeney.
Getting to Division 1 was something, but he needed to get promotion. They were between Division 2 and 3 for a few years.

They lack a good keeper like Saun Patton or Ray Galligan who can pick out passes short and long, and comfortable under high ball. Poor defence too.

I have been hearing so much about this talented Armagh forward line for years.

Stevie McDonnell and Wooly Parkinson seem to think they are all Ireland contenders and they always fall to horrible defeats. They struggled against a poor enough Derry team in first round - that should have been a clear indication of where they are.

They struggled to get out of Div 3 for years. The same as Div 2. I cant see them doing much in Div 1 to be honest unless they improve drastically or other teams take the eye of the ball.

None of the above managers could do much with that team.

Agree why not give the winners the credit they deserve it's a bit like your neighbours down south who never admit to be not good enough and want to blame referees, managers, selectors etc. They seem to think they have a God given right to win every game.

As I've said in other threads, McGeeney took on a team that had just pushed Donegal to the pin of their collar in the quarter finals (before Donegal went on to beat Dublin). Armagh have gone nowhere since then. No visible improvements, be it results or performances.

McGeeney achieved little with Kildare and little of note with Armagh. How has he been given so much time to prove himself? What are Armagh waiting for? If he hasn't proven himself already, I can't see how he'll do it now!

I'd say it's because of his cult status as a player in Armagh. That maybe covers up the cracks he has as manager.

Even getting promoted to Division 1,Armagh nearly blew it. They lost at home to Roscommon, and struggled past Clare to clinch it.

Lads Armagh are a bit behind Donegal, behind Tyrone and also Monaghan. I don't think a new manager is going to change that. Maybe it is time for a new man but it won't make them challengers yet.

True post; as Mickey Harte has hinted about in the last few days and something Canavan sort of agreed with in a more diplomatic way is success isn't just about winning titles.

Mickey Harte was a special; experienced manager who worked miracles with a very average Tyrone set up. It's more likely despite what Cavanagh championed on the SG and backed up elsewhere that Tyrone will fall out of Div 1 and have shorter summers post Harte opposed to all of a sudden beating the top teams and winning All Ireland's - something they've been miles from doing this past decade when he is gone.

There was/is a lot of hype regarding Tyrone players like there is about some of Armagh's players - I put that more down to the success of the 00's and personalities from that era being well known and appearing in media circles. There is also an element of lazy journalism.

I don't think if those three managers coached Armagh they'd do much better. McGeeney's record in the Ulster championship isn't great but he came very close to beating Roscommon and Mayo to get into the super 8's and has Armagh back in Div 1. There are a lot of counties who'd love to be in Div 1; yes there is more to do if they want to get back to the 00 days but inter county football is all about the players available and maybe when a manager hits the glass ceiling they can only land at a certain level.

Yes special managers like Harte can push a team beyond what they really should be capable of but those type of managers are so few and hardly exist;; only way to get them is if you're lucky enough to have them in your county.

Well they beat Monaghan last year in qualifiers.
Seen a post of 4 Armagh players goading Murphy after winning a free. Armagh put a lot of energy into the macho stuff. Concentrate more on the football,

6 seasons as manager, 2 as selector before. Sum total is one promotion to division 1 and a hammering to Donegal.

Very overrated. Kildare spell was average too. Got several seasons there, eventually promoted to div 1 after several years and had two nearly seasons. Other years took big hammerings off Dublin and Cork.

In preparation seems a very good manager. Teams are always fit and physically very good. That will take any team quite a way. However, the big problem is he is very poor on selection and even worse on tactics. His teams never once have outthought an opponent, either going into a game or by making changes in the game itself.

If Armagh want to progress they need change.
