Good game. Galway's concession of frees kept Kilkenny in it but they just needed a goal to kill them off. Didn't come & Cats took their chances then. Not ideal having Joseph Cooney one-to-one with TJ on the 21 yard line. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 3868 - 16/11/2020 15:43:49 2310165 Link 1 |
The Galway goal did come but the ref decided to reward cynical play and took away the advantage.

Agreed. He should have just pulled him down or held him, like Lawlor did to Burke in the first half, saving a certain goal. We need to get a lot more streetwise.

When Richie Hogan scored his goal the Galway defender threw his hurley to try and stop the ball from going into the empty net. Newyorkkat (Kilkenny) - Posts: 5 - 16/11/2020 17:13:11 2310236 Link 2 |
Yes I saw that and its disgraceful...I absolutely can't stand anybody who throws a hurl, no matter who they are or where they are from!

If he had stopped ball would play have continued because he did not throw hurley at a player.

I really don't know. Are you opening up another can of worms ? Did a player lose the grip on the stick and the hurley stopped the ball. It becomes subjective probably. There is no question that a player throwing his stick after or towards a player is guilty and in danger of injuring an opponent. Maybe that is subjective to. Was he trying to hit the ball but this could be dealt with by if a player is between him and the ball it is dangerous play.

" A thrown hurl which intervenes with the ball or player results in a free to the opposition and a yellow card/red card to the culprit depending on the severity of the incident "

Joseph Cooney is a forward who has been repositioned to the halfback line. Daithí Burke should've still been on TJ & probably Aidan Harte on Richie. KK are often able to conjure these sort of mismatches to their advantage at crucial stages in tight games.

You don't have to be a seasoned defender to know it's best to foul TJ when he's 1-on-1 just outside the 14 yard line. Cooney could even say it was a clumsy "forward's tackle".

Obviously, it's a help. Ask Joseph.

Look at TJ's goal again. Cooney couldn't have fouled him even if he had wanted to.

J Cooney played centre half-back for his club for years. He's an all round skilful hurler.

Why use quotation marks for something you just made up?

Joseph Cooney won a minor All Ireland as a half back and was outstanding at centre back for his club in the Galway championship this year. He might well have played all his senior career in the backs for Galway except that his physical presence and ball winning ability was considered more needed in the forwards when he was starting out. Unfortunately he was a half back with a half backs instinct caught in the full back line for TJs goal

I accept that. He has been excellent in the halfback line the last 2 years but you don't really want him in a two-man fullback line opposing TJ Reid & Richie Hogan. Daithí Burke totally negated TJ in the 1st half but Joseph must've picked up TJ in the half forwards in the 2nd half & then stayed with him when he moved back inside. KK keep moving around until they find a chink in your armour & Galway's 4 other backs got sucked too far out the field.

He could certainly have taken him down when he TJ caught it. He stood off and that was that. You can't give the bould TJ an inch.

He could've chucked his hurley at him like Kilkenny did to Lar in 2010

Ya can't understand why he did not let the game go on and then go back and give yellow to lawlor. He did not do anything not even the yellow. The rule should be applied. What they could do is if foul is committed then the forward can take all the steps he wants until the defender let's go then the normal rules apply in relation to steps. If no advantage then back for free after 5 seconds and give yellow card. If the defender does not let go and rugby tackles to the ground then straight red maybe even a penalty depending on location ie inside 21. But if Horgan applied the rules properly then Galway would have had the goal and lawlor would be on a yellow so he could not foul again. It just can't pay to foul.

KK players never had hurleys thrown at them
