Galway V Mayo Connacht Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Mayo probably the better team overall but if I was from Galway I would be absolutely livid with the referee. Not just the ridiculous decision at the end when Higgins jumped on the Galway players back but Sice was fouled in the lead up to one of Mayos last frees. Was a very bad day at the office for him but he wasnt the only man out on the field to underperform.

Because it's not a red card offence...it's a black card offence...cynical play from mayo at the end but sure maybe the media will find some way if pinning the blame on Tyrone

A tight finish but in truth Mayo should have been home and hosed at half-time.

Mayo gassed,
Galway lacking match fitness
Was always going to be drawn out affair, but i doubt cork or Tipp will be quaking in their boots

People making a big deal out of E.McLoughlin's foul near the end but why not balance things and admit that Paul Conroy should have been shown a straight red.

I know it's not a red card offence. But why isn't it? If he took him down for a penalty would it be red and not black? Cavanagh is a legend, was dead right to do what he did and any player would have done it. Pay no heed to analysts looking to make a name for themselves. Tyrone won 3 All Ireland's, some whinging analysts will never take that away from them.

In fairness there was no red card offenses today, yes the Ref was poor for both sides with some questionable decisions at times but overall they balanced out over the game, from a Galway viewpoint, I thought Sice was fouled, Ref let it go, score to Mayo, Silke did well to turn Higgins over and should have got the free when Higgins sat on him. We probably would have scored it. A game of missed chances for both but two stand out McLaughlin for Mayo, he should have clipped that over and Heaney for Galway, Silke gave him a sublime hand pass after ghosting in, he should have at least got the point. Finally the sideline kick was a poor option, Galway had a spare players as the keeper had pushed up with McLaughlin gone on the black, it should have been worked in better.

Totally agree. Straight in on goals and deliberately taking-out with 2 minutes left.

Great to win a Connaught championship with so many new young players, great going forward. We put in an okay performance considering its our fifth week on the trout. Galway did really well in defense, tight and compact with good tackling. I felt we were being cleaned out a lot in the middle, losing the combination of seamus/parsons/boyler/doherty/vaughan/aido shows a lot at times...nonetheless our middle third is very mobile at the moment which does help a lot in quick transition plays.

Shane Walsh (fluffed it in the end with the 2 frees and the sideline dribble pass) but still what a player. The total complete forward.

Well deserved break for the lads!

Mayo passed the test. I wasn't sure they would beat Galway but they showed they are ready for a real tilt at Sam again. The young players played well again and if they improve their conversion rate they will run the Dubs very close in the AI final.
In a strange year it would be bitter sweet for all Mayo fans if they finally win Sam with none of them in attendance!

Game time makes a huge difference. Galway went in thier today cold and only just got beat. Mayo failings in front of goal again. But winter football is taking alot of quality out of these games also.

People focusing on the ref who let Galway away with just as much. The tackle at the end was what had to be done. Make it a red card if you want, but don't cry about it afterwards. Conroy probably should have got the road.

Mayo were poor but still won. Shane Walsh kept Galway in the game. Top class player, Comer as well. Break will do Mayo good now. Get Carr back to full fitness and a couple of others. I can't see Mayo not making the final now.

Galway poor bar conroy and kelly who were superb yet again. Far too many passengers , coen also lucky along with mcloughin black cards wise. Less said about the ref the better. They will fancy their chances now of giving the dubs a test in final

Gassed? Galway would have beaten Cork or Tipp by a bit to spare and I'd expect Mayo to win that semi final comfortably. Kerry have a long winter ahead of themselves as they basically blew an All Ireland final appearance away last Sunday.

Congratulations Mayo, made better decisions and experience saw them through, horrible number of wides but did better in the second half, some half back line.

Commiserations Galway, if it's any consolation thought the better team lost. I think the Sligo game worked against you and made you slow out of the traps. Thought the ref and luck was against you. Big things ahead for this Galway team, I feel you are maybe a one reliable forward away from competing for the big prize. Shane Walsh is the best player in the Country, simply magnificent.

Yer coding nobody lad. Donegal are far better prepared after they deal with Cavan for a Semi final. Mayo Donegal final for me.

Gas man picking and choosing. Didn't spot any Galway black cards no? Coen was a yellow at worst . Watch it again. Galway man purposely ducks into it then pretends to have a head injury.

they have played 5 weeks in a row, and the turf won't be so heavy at HQ.

Yes but even if they balanced out the critical ones at the critical times were awarded to Mayo. The Keith Higgins one the most notable as it would have been very likely a score from the resultant free to us. To me that is as good as a two point swing. Also the ref pulling us back with the sideline near the end when the player who received it was in a good position. Another potential point lost. We were rusty at the start but once settled and at half time we should have won it from there. Our tactics were pretty okay except they should have left a not fully fit Damo Comer on the square for the short time he was on. Wasted out the field. Anyway well done Mayo and ignoring the tripe generalisations about Galway folk from that poster earlier in this thread. Awful keyboard warrior stuff.
