Replying To hashtag2017: "Ah lord moc.dna he was never going to take SW off. If the stats men were doing their job they would have ticked at least 5 possessions lost by him. First minute pass to no one ball went over the end line. Few minutes later caught in possession as he soloed forward, next possession kicked to full forward line (where he should have been), Barrett in front possession lost, brutal pass to JD (stretchered off) and at the end a 40:60 pass to Heaney, game over. Throw into the mix that his man marker kicked a point and I think you will see that one of most experienced players had a bad day at the office." Wrong guy, it was a defender, but of course you knew that & just used your post to have a dig at SW. If SW is the target for Galway supporters after Sunday, then there is little hope for Galway football. Whilst he made errors, only for his scores from play, Galway would not have being at the races. There is no one else on that panel with the skill & ability to kick scores as he did, lots of fellas that will run up & down the field all day, but they have poor skill execution & no ability to kick scores. Galway GAA concentrated on producing athletes instead of footballers or combination of both, over the last few years & it is coming home to roost. If PC & SW were taken out of that team, it would struggle to put scores on the board. Lads are blaming him for missed frees from the left in the last few minutes, I would blame m'ment, they played a left footed free taker for the whole league & then dropped him for C'ship & expect someone else to pick up the responsibility. Also they were from a difficult angle a long way out with a swirling wind. Yes, they were bad wides & costly, but they should have been worked short. M'ment told him to go for the second one despite what happened the first attempt. I see from another of your posts, you praise one particular lad to the hilt, despite everybody saying he had a very average game, same lad with a plethora of game time over the years despite very poor performances. Maybe take off your club tinted glasses & see the full picture. The auld club hatred, west v north & politics in Galway GAA is still very much alive. Bottom line is it is a massive opportunity lost, Kerry gone, Mayo played so bad on the day, easy side of the draw with 3 week lead in to playing teams who were operating at Div 3 level, Dubs minus Gavin, this was a great year to topple the Dubs. Next year, the task will be to beat a stung Kerry, rejuvenated Cork, a Mayo panel that introduced a massive amount of new players who will have gained experience of playing at the business end, a Donegal team shaping to be the team, Tyrone with massive talent & a new manager & of course the Dubs in year 2 with Dessie Farrell, tough ask.

Replying To sourmilk93: "I am far from a Galway supporter bud but anyone who watched the game could see Galway were extremely hard done by. While the two incidents you have highlighted could have been red so could the punch by the Mayo player in the image the lads have linked. Also in the second half i think it was O'Se fouled a Galway player and dropped the knees down on him. He threw his hands up in the air to claim it was accidental and held them there until free was taken. I can remember laughing about how well he played the ref at the time. The picture of innocent's.
Mayo were the better team for majority of the game and should have been way further ahead but when Galway were closing in it has to be said the ref done them no favours." Apart from the 2 reds he missed and several other incidents. Just before, for example, the great sideline run & point by S Walsh T Conroy was fouled by the back ; two hands on the shoulders and thrown down and Hurson gave a free out for over carrying. 2 point swing when the gap was 4 or 5. Several incidents/ tackles like that in the 2nd half but its Hurson - he's a poor ref. Hursons performance was better than his usual IMO and not as bad as the 'analysis' by Dessie Dolan which some here seem to be parroting over what actually happened on the field of play.

After the incident where Higgins was lucky - you could argue it either way- Hurson gave Galway a soft free on the far side. RTE guy starts to say very soft (as in he is making up for the Higgins incident) but Dessie screeches over him. Galway missed the free. That's not to say Dolans opinions are always pure BS just because they usually are. But in this case we will need something to more to back them up - a supporting statement from Katie Hopkins or one of the Kardashains would add some credibility.

With the exception of Antrim (1951), each of the other 8 Counties in Ulster have won the title at least once in the last 23 years - in the same time period 6 Leinster, 4 Connacht and the 2 Munster Counties have won titles." That's tremendous stuff Offside_Rule, love that detail! Thanks. I need to see Galway overtake the Mayo boys again. 47:46, what a battle! For those giving out about Shane Walsh, did u you watch him before lockdown? I'll tell you this - he is likely the most talented footballer in the country. I've seen him do it from a kid all the way through to now, he's simply unmarkable when supported but he's not supported properly and, like a few gifted players I can think of that get handed a captaincy, he could do without that added pressure. There are more natural captains and leaders in the panel anyway. Use SW properly, support him properly and have a dynamic midfield moving with him at pace and he will deliver.

Agree on the captaincy.. He might be better off without that burden. Someone like Conroy or possibly Sean Kelly down the line might be more suited. As a mayo man I was happy to see Walsh pickin up ball on his own 45.. I know he kicked that great score after a long run but he will generally do you less damage in those areas. With his speed, elusiveness, skill and two feet he should stay in closer to goal. One on one he will be impossible to stop without fouling. If he gets double marked it makes more space for other guys in there like Ian Burke.
It's not all doom and gloom for Galway. The team that played on Sunday is fairly young as well. PJ will have learned a lot this year. I wonder will he shake up that backroom team?

Replying To unclegerry: "Agree on the captaincy..
I wonder will he shake up that backroom team?" Leave Conroy be. Hes playing the beat football of his life and has been captain before . I dont think captaincy suited him. Hes a natural leader on the field but I dont think he needed the extra burden of it.
Comer for me fully fit is a great captain. Him getting subbed v kerry in an all ireland QF when he was captain and taking it on the chin and jumping up and down like a crazed fan when his replacement scored a goal is a great memory for me. Hes all about the team
I'm not saying other lads arent but I just thought he was a great captain. It was also our most successful season in the past 20 years

Replying To philip3: "A mayo guy at work today said that it was the first time for many of the Mayo Younger players to actually beat a Galway team going back to u14 level. That's sounds a bit crazy. I know Galway have been dominant at underage level." Up to last year we had lost something like 6 championship games in a row across senior, u21 and minor grades. Last year we ended the streak by winning a memorable Connacht minor final and also at senior in the rd4 qualifier. He could be right but I am not sure about u16 and below to be honest

Very diplomatic Timmy!" Thank you. However diplomatic may not be the correct term but it certainly wasn't malicious - timmyhogan isn't that kind of poster.

Replying To cluichethar: " Replying To yew_tree: "[quote=togoutlads: "[quote=Offside_Rule: "Breakdown of the Provincial Wins/Losses/Appearances by Province. Why? Just because I was bored.
Ulster - 124 titles Cavan: 39 titles (31.45%), beaten finalists 23 times. Total Final appearances 62 Tyrone: 17 titles (13.71%), beaten finalists 8 times. Total Final appearances 25 Monaghan: 16 titles (12.90%), beaten finalists 12 times. Total Final appearances 28 Armagh: 14 titles (11.29%), beaten finalists 21 times. Total Final appearances 35 Down: 12 titles (9.68%), beaten finalists 16 times. Total Final appearances 28 Donegal: 10 titles (8.06%), beaten finalists 13 times. Total Final appearances 23 Antrim: 9 titles (7.26%), beaten finalists 10 times. Total Final appearances 19 Derry: 7 titles (5.65%), beaten finalists 10 times. Total Final appearances 17 Fermanagh: 0 titles (0%), beaten finalists 6 times. Total Final appearances 6
So if all things were equal in the world you'd be looking at an average of 13.8 (14) titles per County and approx 27 final appearances.
Leinster - 132 titles Dublin: 39 titles (43.94%), beaten finalists 25 times. Total Final appearances 62 Meath: 21 titles (15.91%), beaten finalists 21 times. Total Final appearances 25 Kildare: 13 titles (9.85%), beaten finalists 22 times. Total Final appearances 28 Offaly: 10 titles (7.58%), beaten finalists 9 times. Total Final appearances 35 Wexford: 10 titles (7.58%), beaten finalists 14 times. Total Final appearances 28 Louth: 8 titles (6.06%), beaten finalists 14 times. Total Final appearances 23 Laois: 6 titles (4.55%), beaten finalists 15 times. Total Final appearances 19 Kilkenny: 3 titles (2.27%), beaten finalists 5 times. Total Final appearances 17 Carlow: 1 title (0.76%), beaten finalists 2 times. Total Final appearances 6 Longford: 1 title (0.76%), beaten finalists 1 time. Total Final appearances 6 Westmeath: 1 title (0.76%), beaten finalists 4 times. Total Final appearances 6 Wicklow: 0 titles (0%), beaten finalists 1 time. Total Final appearances 6
Average would be 11 titles per County and 22 final appearances.
Munster - 131 titles Kerry: 81 titles (61.83%), beaten finalists 25 times. Total Final appearances 107 Cork: 37 titles (28.24%), beaten finalists 21 times. Total Final appearances 89 Tipperary: 9 titles (6.87%), beaten finalists 22 times. Total Final appearances 26 Clare: 2 titles (1.53%), beaten finalists 9 times. Total Final appearances 16 Limerick: 1 title (0.76%), beaten finalists 14 times. Total Final appearances 14 Waterford: 1 title (0.76%), beaten finalists 14 times. Total Final appearances 10
Average would be 21.8 (22) titles per County and 44 final appearances.
Connacht - 121 titles Mayo: 47 titles (38.84%), beaten finalists 35 times. Total Final appearances 82 Galway: 46 titles (38.02%), beaten finalists 33 times. Total Final appearances 79 Roscommon: 23 titles (19.01%), beaten finalists 25 times. Total Final appearances 48 Sligo: 3 titles (2.48%), beaten finalists 15 times. Total Final appearances 18 Leitrim: 2 titles (1.65%), beaten finalists 9 times. Total Final appearances 11
Average would be 24.2 (24) titles per County and 48 final appearances.
Few stats are a bit mad when you see them actually written down e.g. both Ulster and Leinster have one County each who have never won the Provincial (and it's not even Kilkenny in Leinster!!!); Wicklow haven't even been in a final since the 19th Century; Kerry and Cork have won just over 90% of the Munster titles between then and have contested 69 of the 131 finals (and since 1922 their names have been on the trophy all but 2 years!). Keep the provincial championships, an open draw would be a novelty for a short time only, we can't abandon these brilliant local rivalries honed over more than a century. They're the lifeblood of our championship." Mayo and Galway are neck in neck and will continue to be on senior Connacht titles. It was interesting to read Michael Meehan state Galway have underperformed with just 2 All Ireland's in 50 years...well if that's the case our record is even worse.
I had a look and Mayo have more Connacht minor and u21 titles than Galway too. 40 minors titles to 29. In u21 it's 24 to 19.
Our record in national finals is a horror show.
