The one downer from the weekend football was the evidence of persistent fouling around the middle of the field to the 45 yard line to breakdown an attack and allow a whole defensive unit (usually 10 or more players) to reset. Cork were at it, Kerry were at it and so too were Mayo. There was even 1 or two cases from my own team against Antrim. ponger (Cavan) - Posts: 449 - 08/11/2020 22:05:10 2306503 Link 2 |
It probably makes more sense than ever now to foul in that area. The advanced mark can only be called from a ball kicked in during open play. So a free kick in that area means no handy marks or else they can go lateral/backwards and give you time to get your defensive shape.

It was appalling the amount of cynical fouls in the Kerry and Cork game, the players weren't even trying to disguise it. I know the conditions were poor but it was foul after foul. The ref was very poor, a couple of black cards early on would have made a difference. Green_Gold (Donegal) - Posts: 1730 - 09/11/2020 14:06:06 2306817 Link 2 |
That was exactly the reason it was brought in and blocking runners in the middle third. It is so obvious that it is a tactic being used by teams and referees should be well aware of it. It is ruining the game.

The first Kerry black card could have got 2 in the same play! He took one man out continued on to another.... in theory a red! Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1292 - 10/11/2020 11:59:07 2307164 Link 1 |
Consistency in its application is worrying. A lad could get a black card for trip and then an opposition player does the same and gets a yellow. dakid (Australia) - Posts: 257 - 11/11/2020 13:51:43 2307592 Link 0 |
Sledging is a black card offence and the ref bottled it sun eve. He changed a free decision due to two Cork players sledging but had nt the balls to issue black. I suppose he d have to have given 2 Cork players black at same time so he just ignored it. The black card is also deliberate trip pull down and yes blocking runs.
