I think this game is very hard to call. I'm leaning towards Meath but very slightly. Kildare missing one of their better players but improving all the time. Meath are very interesting. The league table does nt liie (Meath did nt win a game) but were very unlucky in a lot of the games so they are much better than the table suggested . Ah no better boys to show the Dubs up ! Sure do you remember the thrashing you gave us in the Leinster final last year? Sure we still haven't gotten over that !!!

Being honest, there are not that many anaomalies in the current league table placings. Its much easier to be unlucky and lose a few games than win even one game in division 1. Kildare experienced that a couple of years ago too. Some great performances but ultimately not good enough to beat the top teams. Most teams are within a spot or two of where I would rank them apart from Cork who are a top half div 2 team IMO. Below I've had a go at ranking counties and banding teams that are of similar ability. Most games between teams in similar bands would be 50/50 to 60/40 games and no more I think. Nah couldn't see Cavan ahead of Down. And a few others could be moved around. But generally about right. I'd have it regardless of league and including what has been played already as follows. 1 Dublin 2 Kerry 3 mayo 4 Donegal 5 Galway 6 Tyrone 7 Meath 8 cork 9 Monaghan 10 Roscommon 11 Kildare 12 Down 13 Armagh 14 Cavan 15 Laois 16 tipp. That be my top 16 at the minute Tbh I think 6 to 12 u could throw a blanket over them and one or the other could beat each other on any given day. 234 are still trying to catch 1, while 5 to 12 has closed the gap on 2, 3 , and 4 royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 17035 - 10/11/2020 17:32:22 2307291 Link 1 |
There was an apology forthcoming yesterday which I partially accepted in principle though it was subsequently removed as was my riposte for some reason...

I have a feeling it will be Meath in the Leinster Final this year, and if we make it, it will be a real battle and nothing like last years demolition...! I think Kildare will be better than last week but have a strong feeling Meath will win it.... Impressed by some of their newcomers. Weak spot for me is their kickouts - but the spine of the team is a lot stronger now. On a sidenote - Division 2 next year will be some dogfight...! Don't even want to think of div 2. Meath mayo cork Kildare Down Laois. All still in championship in last 12. All in division 2.

Sunday will be a real test for the two new kids on the block Morris for Meath and Kirwan for Kildare, a 19 year old and a 20 year old who have played a couple of league games and 1 championship game each. Both of them are shooting big scores from play and both being man of the match on 2 occasions. NorthKildare (Kildare) - Posts: 169 - 10/11/2020 22:32:30 2307405 Link 0 |
No! Its that long ago ive completely forgotten about it! So much has happened since then but if something that happened 10 years ago makes you feel all warm and fuzzy Royaldunne then go for it ,whats seldom is wonderful!

2010 was a weird old year, Meath beating Dublin and putting 5 goals past them, winning a Leinster title.....now of course normal service resumed with Meath for the next decade after the strange year of 2010..... b..b..b..but surely 2020 can't be the same?

RoyalDunne prediction of the game Meath by 2 isn't actually bad but some of the stuff he says reflects an attitude of superiority which Meath doesn't currently deserve and must find a way to get back (this superiority complex is what held us back for years, presuming things would be fine because we're Meath). Don't be fooled this is the all Ireland final for both teams. A win over Kildare on Sunday would be Meath's biggest since Kildare in 2012. (We beat Kildare in 14 but that was post Geezer). Meath are playing very cohesively and have the best squad they've had in a while. But Kildare have a massive advantage in three areas. Goalkeeper, midfield for kickouts and frees/45's. Meath still haven't settled on a keeper and I'd be worried about an error costing us. Feely destroyed us in 2017 with this same midfield. I know Jones is 23 now and a better player than in 2017 but he is giving up a lot of height. This Meath midfield is very good in general play and relatively poor on kickouts. Frees and 45's are a disaster. Morris seems to be good from the right side with his left. Thomas O'Reilly very iffy on the other, Walsh might take them. And 45's we have nobody capable of kicking one. It should be a very good game and could go either way. It's two teams at a similar level that don't have similar strengths I would say, always makes for a good one LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 833 - 12/11/2020 11:09:29 2307903 Link 5 |
Another advantage Meath have is creating goal chances. Not just against Wicklow, you could see it during league as well. Kildare didn't create a single goal chance against Offaly and I think we had the least goals scored in div 2. I think this could be the difference, especially if O'Grady is not back on Sunday. Normally confident for Meath games but not this one. Will need a big improvement for Kildare to win . St.Conleth (Kildare) - Posts: 1623 - 12/11/2020 12:01:16 2307920 Link 2 |
Do u mind elaborating on superiority that I said ?? As I don't see any. I have never went to a game not believing we can win. That in my book is been a supporter, may I also add that I have always stated that it maybe unlikely that we'd win but give us a chance if a or b happens. I actually think that defeatist attitude is entirely the cause of Meath downfall, I think that is evident in some past players , who were just happy to walk around navan in the tracksuit just to say they in the team, or get a shift in the palace. Andy has brought back in a steel into the team and above all else a belief that they can compete with anyone, that for me is the main difference, their is no more talk from any member of management that ahh only this player or that player could have played with this team or that county. No more players saying what's the point we won't beat dub. That is the difference now than other years, it's taken mcentee time to cut those who held that attitude, basically he doesn't give a rats behind what club u from, who said what about u, he has bowed to no player, I have not in many many years seen such a United team as the Meath team is at the moment, to quote a panel member pre lockdown, I might not make the starting team every time like donal keoghan but he will be dropped like me if I don't perform or get too big for our boots. Their is no pecking order that anyone is better than anyone else. We put on the jersey we are all the exact same. What's changed in Meath football?? Attitude. If I been honest I think both teams are probably equally talented, I think the difference is Meath have eventually got a work ethic and ruthless streak that has been missing since boylan , 3/8 years ago if we went down in a game by 6/5 or even 4 points that was it, this year after slow starts (which probably cost us div 1 safety) we kept to the plan and kept going. No panic if a team got a run on us, v Wicklow the subs that came on as well as the team didn't stop. It didn't matter that we were up 15 20 points. They fought for every ball every score. Dear lord with 70 mins on the clock forwards were defending In back line. That's the difference . That's why I think we will prevail by a couple of points. And no I don't think this is our all ire. I think SHOULD we prevail our all ire is against Dublin. There is a itch there to scratch. They were like they caught in the headlights last year. Their aim is to prove they are better than that. But while us fans can speculate Andy will have the team fully focused on Kildare. We have seen before what looking past a team can do. That won't happen on Sunday. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 17035 - 12/11/2020 12:29:45 2307929 Link 0 |
Saying that we have one eye on a blue fish to fry and that it's Kildare's all Ireland but not ours. That's a superiority complex. You know I am a massive Andy fan from the Meath forum RD. And Andy has gotten the team back to basics of Meath football. Hard work, humility and toughness. And the team is definitely getting better. But this is the only game that matters, for as much progress as we made in the last two years the biggest championship win we have is over Clare by a point. You said about players in the past "who were just happy to walk around navan in the tracksuit just to say they in the team, or get a shift in the palace". That's the superiority complex I am talking about. Meath players started to think playing for Meath meant you were successful which was a very arrogant way of thinking. That's part of the superiority complex I was referring to. Along with more importantly at county board level taking the eye off the ball underage

Oh I agree. But I was speaking about us the fans having a eye on a bigger blue fish. I have no doubt Andy is focused on one game at a time.
