I'd say O'Se would struggle to name one player from either Leitrim, Longford or Sligo and he's one of the senior pundits on the sunday game, yet he's judging these same counties. We know we aren't as glamorous as Kerry or Dublin that he's always glorifying, but a bit of effort would be appreciated to treat us all equally. republicofcloone (Leitrim) - Posts: 120 - 04/11/2020 12:05:42 2305080 Link 2 |
Ironic coming from a Kerry man...the great Kerry teams of the past had to win 3 games...beat Cork and then semi and final. The playing field has never been fair or level.

Genuine asylum seekers are welcome in Donegal I keep telling you, the other variety of asylum seekers from Leitrim go to Sligo I believe?

Stmunn would that be Galway hurlers or Galway footballers. Believe me and most outside don't recognise it Galway unfortunately has a bit of divide and conquer policy with the county very split and essentially being two counties to mirror the two codes. Seriously though this is very unfortunate on Sligo and not one Galway football person is happy with a straight run to a provincial final. I wonder were Sligo premature in forfeiting and should they have fought harder for a postponement. The least any county deserves given the situation we are all in.

With injuries key players and low in confidence yes Sligo would get within 10 points of us currently. We are much better than our last two performances and realistically I am looking at 2021 when we have Damo Comer, Peter Cooke and John Daly back.

To be honest I wouldn't call it hypocrisy, it's campaigning for a tiered structure in my view, Tomas O'Se like a lot of top level pundits desperately want rid of the lower ranked teams. Basically you tend to get these reactions from those who want a tiered championship (using Sligo as an example): Sligo win = well this doesn't happen very often so let's forget about it Sligo lose = well this is the reason why we need a tiered championship, let's 'help' them by cutting them adrift Sligo pull out for legitimate reasons = oh well the 'weaker counties' don't care about the championship anyway Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8583 - 04/11/2020 12:36:24 2305087 Link 3 |
Glad to see this story get the exposure that it deserves It's sad to see the team in this situation. It's a serious disease to some and not very much is known about the long term impacts Jack Byrne of Shamrock Rovers was very ill with it recently. A young healthy sportsman. There's no way to know if you'll end up on a ventilator in Intensive care, it's a roll of the dice. I hope the Sligo lads will be OK and of course their close contacts. I don't think it's right that they've been exposed to it in this manner as amateur sportsmen If yiz want to bury your heads and have something to watch on the box fair enough but I don't think it's acceptable to expose our players and their families to a very serious illness We're playing Russian roulette with the players and their families for entertainment purposes from a completely devalued championship. It's purely a money decision. No thanks. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20035 - 04/11/2020 12:39:34 2305088 Link 1 |
I agree Jimbo this situation is way too serious to mess with. I think Tomás Ó Sé's comments re weaker counties is a disgrace. Comments like that in middle of a pandemic just shows how out of touch a section of the GAA is from reality.

I said nothing about how likely it was Niall, just that they were two games away. It's knockout championship football in winter, it's anyone's guess what could happen. If Sligo had a full complement with no withdrawals I doubt the management and team would be going in thinking "we're not getting within 10 points of Galway here". I'm surprised by the attitude of Tomas o Shea.is he doubting the Sligo players and medics?if it was Kerry who were going out without 10 or 12 of their starting 15 due to covid, would he be the same..if this happens one of the major counties a couple of days before their game,it will be a different story.. Agree. Very disappointed by Thomas O Shea's comments. In fact they are outrageous.

Tomas OSe questioning so called weaker counties pulling out of games...ok for him to say with a panel of where you can replace anyone one player with someone else, no disrespects to Sligo or any other so called weaker county, they dont have that option, another way of looking at the situation is, are the so called weaker counties being more responsible than the so called bigger counties "playing anyway"....its amazing how the bigger counties with bigger populations dont seem to be "affected" by covid much at all...

Sligo had only 11 players from entire panel available to play. Did Tomas expect them to go to the clubs and look for 15 players to come into the panel for the day and compete with one of the favourites to win the all ireland. So out of touch with whats going on. It's all a side show this year, walk overs? During the championship... that's no championship That's my opinion. It's a spectacle being played for the GAA to recoup loses by accessing state aid and avoiding broadcasting right issues. In doing so risking the health of players and their families. I don't think you can be an elite sports person while also being amateur Elite sports has much more scope to maintain a bubble for numerous reasons GAA players do not have these options. I'd question their elite status in this type of climate given the lack of options compared to their professional counterparts. They simply aren't in the same bracket U20 Galway and Kerry panels were very badly impacted and played against each other with many players unavailable for both panels. The U20 championship was correctly deemed too high risk but it also helped it wasn't bringing in the €€€ jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20035 - 04/11/2020 13:47:36 2305105 Link 1 |
Tomas O'Shea's comments are disgraceful... not one bit surprised by him, or the lack of kerry posters on here condemning his views... They are quick enough to attack individual posters on here though....! Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 3309 - 04/11/2020 13:59:49 2305107 Link 2 |
He doesnt want us 'weaker' counties near a Championship. We will be lumped into a b competition where we will be forgotten about like McDonagh and Ring counties in hurling. You can bet if Kerry or Dublin were considering a forfeit due to the virus he'd write a long column praising their decision as being the right one in the circumstances. There is absolutely no benefit to Sligo for having forfeited this game, i'd say they were sad to do so. They deserve a degree of sympathy, not a tweet like his.

Club players wouldn't have played or trained in over a month, not like its middle of summer where you could draft players in. And even then a big step up

So in your opinion the U20 football championship is devalued this year so, that's fair enough then. Also on the allireland senior football championship, I said it on another thread that players don't have to play if they want to, nobody says they have to, Jack mac decided not to play this year as he has also done in the past and nobody said nothing back then and nobody said nothing to him now and it gives some other player that does want to play a chance to stake a claim. If a team can't compete due to Covid and because of the tight deadline then they need to take it up with John horan as it is he who made the rules for this year.
