Replying To Crinigan:  "It's farcical and they are rightfully a laughing stock in the rugby "world". Eddie Jones spot on. 1/3 of the team bought in - a joke. It's no different to the likes of Qatar and Turkey and such countries beefing up their athletics teams with Kenyans and Ethiopians in order to compete.

I'd be raging if I was an Irish professional rugby player looking at these lads coming in.

They should change their strip to black and white and call themselves the Barbarians."
Good post; I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying farcical but rugby at international level is certainly different to other sports. Decisions appear to be made with a business head on; the international scene isn't a case of players who'd classify themselves Irish growing up or came through an Irish club/pathway; it's more about players employed in Ireland.

If you're not employed in Ireland you don't qualify for the national team. I wouldn't mind scouting players as the rules are there and all the countries do it; what I do find strange and farcical is players born in Ireland; those who went through the Irish pathway don't qualify to represent their national team as they're currently employed in France - strange.

Not different at all. Name any sport that doesnt have teams competing at international level that doesnt have many/any players born in different countries to the country they play for?
Rugby is far from unique. Those playing abroad know they will not be selected. That is a completely different and unrelated issue.

Our posts agree Killingfields; Irish rugby aren't doing anything different and the players contribute a lot to the game here; if it improves us great.

What is different to other sports though is you automatically don't qualify to play for your country if you're not employed in Ireland. There's no other international sport that uses that rule; that's the part I find strange. If your good enough for your national team you're good enough and have a chance of selection despite where you're playing in other sports.

Think there is other sports that have selection rules
Its not that you dont qualify if not employed in the home country. You are not selected. That is a very big difference.
The countries that do have this selection policy in place do it to protect their own professional teams as they know players would leave and move to big money leagues in england and france if they dont.

No it's only rugby uses that rule; no other international team sport uses it. I've noticed it questioned in the media this week; scouted players are a great addition to Irish rugby and as I've said contribute so much and increase the standard of the sport and it's good to have them.

I'm not sure you can have that policy but then close the door on players who came through the Irish system just because they're not employed in Ireland. It isn't about selection; if Farrell wanted to select Zebo it would be blocked so it is about qualifying.

If you're not employed in Ireland you don't qualify to play for your country. Ireland's record at the major rugby tournaments are woeful so there isn't a benefit to continuing with it; if players want to earn a good living and represent their country at the same time it should be allowed. The IRFU usually react to public opinion as they're about commercial deals etc so I do expect this rule will be relaxed soon as it appears the media have now caught onto it.

Young GAA players are allowed to earn a living in the AFL and still play GAA if they want to and are allowed to by their AFL clubs when back in Ireland. I'm glad the GAA don't punish players for wanting to better themselves; we have the right balance in the GAA despite disppointment when a star player moves.

I think its important to remember its not just the Rugby guys who are jealous of the GAA. The Ireland soccer manger Stephen Kenny also thrown digs at the GAA when they opened up Páirc Uí Chaoimh for a charity event in aid of a soccer player. Kenny said when writing in his pre-match programme notes ahead of Dundalk's Europa League clash against AEK Larnanca

"When Damien Duff called the GAA committee dinosaurs he was doing dinosaurs a disservice"

Likening the current situation in which Miller's family are "being treated without dignity by the GAA authorities in Cork," Kenny likened the situation to that which Arsenal's Mesut Ozil revealed earlier in the week.

A World Cup winner with Germany in 2014, Ozil believed he had to remove himself from the national team set amid claims that he had been racial discriminated as a result of his Turkish background.

We all know that Irish soccer is in a great place at the moment. Kenny himself has crashed and burned. Lack of decent players is no excuse for not scoring a goal. There are weaker teams who manage to do it just fine.

Mesut Ozil. The highest paid unemployed sportsperson in the world. No workrate and plenty of excuses. Arteta was right to exclude him from his Arsenal squad. A disgrace that he was recently paid an £8m bonus and is still paid £350K per week for doing nothing because he has a good agent. I like soccer but it's hard to argue with people who say soccer is a joke because some players are paid rockstar wages for very little effort.

He's also a complete hypocrite. Shouts about a just cause regarding China's treatment of Uighurs, but then has the president of Turkey as his best man. A president who has overseen worse treatment of Kurdish people in own country. I know this is way off topic, but just chiming in on the last post.

I agree with you about Kenny ........and Duff. At the time they made those comments they had their heads in the sand in relation to what was happening at the top level of the FAI. I have no involvement whatever in soccer and yet I knew from some of my soccer acquaintances that there was something rotten going on. Rather than throwing insults at the GAA, would Kenny and Duff not have been better employed asking serious questions about what was happening in their own organisation? "People in glasshouses, etc."

Duff's criticism of the GAA had nothing to do with the shambolic way the FAI did their business. It was because they prevented the Miller testimonial being played in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. No one was claiming the FAI was anything other than a mess and Duff had previously criticised the FAI.

And a lot of soccer/rugby folk are jealous of the GAA. Irish soccer is in decline and long may that continue. It's better for the GAA.

Why would anybody need to be jealous of another sport? Would it not just make sense to take up that sport instead of looking on with envy at others playing it? I like a bit of soccer. Dont have much time for rugby. Too stop start for me. That's my opinion. That likely offends Walter Mitty there. But it is laughable that quote coming from a rugby fan who spends his days being obnoxious to GAA fans on a GAA forum.

I don't see why it has to be "us against them" as far as different sports go. Why can't you just like what you like? I like all the sports with Hurling being my favorite. Do Snooker players and fans hate Darts players and fans? Enjoy your preferences and let others enjoy theirs.
