Before you laugh too hard at the prospect just hear me out. Could all Hurlers and Footballers play with masks on if there was unlimited substitutions? 3 or 5 water breaks per half? Just food for thought and GAA related unlike many political laden posts I've had to plow through. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 1082 - 16/10/2020 22:40:49 2298233 Link 0 |
Only way this would work, cut a hole in the mask so players could catch a breath or else switch the water breaks to ambulance breaks! Come on lad, thats desperate stuff, I know its gone a bit political on here but players would be safer contracting Covid than trying that suggestion. No. I struggle to breathe in a mask walking around the town. I can't imagine being able to play with a mask on. Water breaks every 7½ - or even 5 - minutes ? No. I'm not sure I understand the rationale of needing any. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 369 - 17/10/2020 10:20:11 2298289 Link 0 |
Did I read somewhere that NFL players are playing with masks and visors? StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 864 - 17/10/2020 10:45:29 2298304 Link 1 |

They get a rest every five seconds, though. It could be a good gazme if they just get on with it. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 369 - 17/10/2020 13:19:15 2298354 Link 0 |

Fair answer and thanks for not insulting or veering towards politics as some have done. I mainly asked the title question due to many people being extremely scared of spreading this horrible virus and many are against having sport at all until this thing is 100% gone so as a comprise I just wondered if masks could work. The general consensus judging by most responses is NO.

Unless you have underlying health issues, of course you can play in a mask. In boxing training, the poor man's altitude training is an air restrictor mask which seeks to improve your lung capacity by deliberately restricting air flow. It genuinely is restrictive, but I've gone ten rounds hard sparring wearing one, and I'm in my 50s and not very fit. Field sports are less demanding than boxing. The idea that you couldn't play a team sport with a mask which is not designed to restrict breathing is unconvincing; and suggesting that, absent some serious underlying health condition, you can't even walk around town wearing a mask is nonsense.

So do lots of GAA players. Every 5-10 seconds now their is either a free, a line ball or the ball is at the other end of the pitch

Yeah the days of Free Flowing sport seems to be gone. Sigh.
