Return Of The Championship - Excited ? Not Overly Bothered ?

Replying To sam1884:  "Think about this for a second - 75% of players (three quarters) do want to proceed. Yes there are risks and who knows if we have to eventually go into level 5. I'm looking forward to the championship starting and seeing where we go. I also strongly suspect it'll end up being one of the best quality championships in a number of years. Straight knockout, teams just giving it a go with less tactical plans, upsets galore, hard hitting football due to the conditions. Any win during these months will be hard won. I also believe Dublin won't win it which brings more excitement to the competition."
One of the best in terms of quality?

Well you're entitled to your opinion and please don't take this as argumentative

But when a large slice of players don't even want to play, I don't see how you're coming to that conclusion.

It's unprecedented that so many players don't want to play

Also the silent void of playing in front of no supporters doesn't make for great motivation for said players to bring the best out of themselves.

I don't see it being quality

No true I respect your opinion as well Jimbodub! You may be correct but I think tactical systems have destroyed the quality of the football championship to some extent. This is a unique year and I can see players just playing off the cuff. For that reason I can see a lot of quality coming through. I also believe when the championship starts and the Donegal v Tyrone is the perfect start it will build momentun amongst fans/teams/players/media. Of course safety always has to be most important aspect of the season.

I can understand people's worries at this time and a lot of ye are looking down the road and hoping for better times ahead but there's no guarantee that things will be better in 6 months the Government NEPHET and the media all say we have to learn to live with Covid so is this not what our footballers and hurlers are trying to do?

At the end of the day none of these players are contracted to their counties and nobody has a gun to anyones head, if they dont want to play I'm sure there are plenty who'll take their place.

Young athletes in their prime should be out playing sport, it is their choice. Finish the league and any tournament that was started in the spring. The virus will be with us for years don't forget, we have to live with it. If things get worse Govt. will go to level 5. Meanwhile, play on.

Interesting Dublin team for tonight Jimbo - only 9 regulars starters.
Will be interesting to see how Cian Murphy does, and Emmett gets yet another chance in Midfield....

It'll be interesting alright Fionn

Looking forward to watching Con

He's not kicked a ball for Dublin in 2020 after arguably being the best player in the country last year

Also. Paddy Small is now a beast

If the championship goes ahead I'd expect PS to have a big say in any success that may come Dublin's way

Hmm not sure about that like. NPHET have been recommending level 5 for a week now. There's times to live more normally and times when we need to be more cautious. This is a time to be more cautious.

I do wonder why our testing capacity hasn't been worked on harder. Even when there's a vaccine, it sounds like it's not just going to be a miraculous fix all and there's going to still need to be better testing to get back to proper living.

We may be able to live with it but we're not in a position to do it now. People's behaviour can't go back to before March, which I think some thought would happen after lockdown ended.

Living with it involves treating it with caution.

Meath for Leinster, stretching the mighty Dubs tonight.

KingdomBoy1, NPHET are very much not saying we have to live with it.

Strange post considering they have to play your own county first before a possible Leinster Final.

Yes well some Nphet members would like us to have a zero Covid strategy, though how practical that is on an island with an open economic model and a shared border and close proximity to Britain and the rest of Europe is another question entirely. Geographically we are not like NZ. But I think Nphet would say that we will have to live with the virus for a long time to come in that the availability of a vaccine isn't going to mean that we will be able to go back to our pre-Covid "normal". We are going to have to live with the "new normal" of increased precautions and some lower restrictions for a considerable period into the future even when a vaccine becomes widely available.

I've been waiting 20 years for a proper championship with no back door so I'm excited that it's about to happen (hopefully)
I'm not at all excited about a sparsely populated county like Leitrim having to concede their very important league game to Down as they couldn't field a team because of Covid - 19.

i am not an epidemiology expert, but i would say that we could look at new zealand (where there are 30-40k at matches already),if you land in nz you have to quarantine for 14 days in a govt facility.we have people landing and they are just let off into the community.to me,anything else we do is pointless if we cant even see that a plane load of people landing from new york is daft.

I found it hard to get into the games this weekend. I watched the Dubs last night and struggled to get interested to be honest. There was a feeling of pantomime about it as this weekend could be the last we see depending on how cases go and what decisions are made tomorrow.

I'm in two mind. I'm looking forward to it but if it goes ahead I hope teams don't lose spades of players due to the covid.

It could be devalued if a few teams are missing lots of players. Otherwise, I'm delighted there's any football at all. I watched a lot of the Tyrone and Fermanagh club championship games online and on TV, and they were the screen highlights of my year tbh. A good county run would be a great bonus. Though I think they should have scrapped the league and focussed on the championship only.
