Myself and skillet were talking about dominance in a specific era like Kilkenny 00s to mid teens and Kerry late 70s to mid 80s and kerry late 90s to late 00s not dominance over all, although its nice to see our over all numbers in print.

Now now there is no need for mud slinging, by the way you're obviously a new multi, and you're not fooling anyone.

I was too young to go when we lost in '63 and suffered a few times since. Had great players and teams but the gods never smiled on us but we will admit that we were not just good enough to get over the line. Even though not experienced the joy of winning an All-Ireland I got a great appreciate for the hurlers of Mayo, Meath, Down, Kildare, Kerry, Carlow, Laois,Westmeath, and the rest of the lesser lights. Players from these counties show commitment, skill and work rate equal to the elites and to this day follow their progress. When we dropped to the lower league divisions travelled all over the country to see these teams play and supported my team the same as when in top flight. In these latter years I find it hard to stomach the arrogance, gloating, rudeness and insults of a lot of the supporters of the elites. Not all thankfully. I believe we have a good man in y'ere Jack Fagan and I am sure he is a loss to Meath. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 979 - 07/10/2020 18:37:42 2296299 Link 0 |

Absolutely it has a big impact bdbudah, that extra bit of space makes a huge difference Although a lot will say great players will find the space anyway and they will but just not as often as in the past.

Yes and no. I don't think that advances in defensive set ups have made it harder for top forwards to stand out. The very best will still be identifiable like McManus, Connolly, and Murphy. There are maybe fewer top level forwards, but they are as good and better as the previous generations. What I do think is that at an individual level it is harder for a defender to stand out. I was tempted earlier to include a comment on the best full backs of the generation as I haven't seen a number 3 being mentioned seriously in this thread at all. In another generation Neil McGee could have been seen as an all-time great, but has a good defensive structure hidden his weaknesses? Has a similar adoption of the same defensive structures meant that the perceived difference in quality between McGee and other top full backs of the day has been narrowed? Yep. .and it's another reason why I'd give far more weight to the exploits of Michael Murphy, Dermot Connolly, David Clifford, etc. who display such talent in spite of this. . .to those of a keeper who the modern game plays into the hands of in the absence of man-to-man marking on kickouts, more protection from backs and next-to-zero high balls into the square etc.

ah jaysus them poor kerry lads cant catch a break. First we took their record away of 4 Sams in a row by winning 5 in a row.... And now your telling me the Famous Kerrygold actually belongs to us!!!!! Come on Jimbo less of that. Let them have the butter they've had a tough couple of years ConnollyDub (Dublin) - Posts: 1922 - 08/10/2020 11:46:36 2296389 Link 5 |
I think they are different types of players standing out now than in the past. The position of the centre half forward, neat play maker who picked out passes for the forwards has been made way harder. I still think there's room for excellence though. You look at the performances from McCaffrey and Sean O'Shea in last year's final and those are performances that any greats would be happy of. Lee Keegan, James McCarthy, Fenton have all produced wonderful complete performances in All Ireland finals in recent years. If anything they are more impressive given the quality of the defensive set ups that they are having to pick apart. They are very different to the great performances of the past. The difference is made from deeper positions nearly. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 3111 - 08/10/2020 11:51:29 2296390 Link 4 |

dublins 5 in a row :-) and it only cost the government and the gaa 30 odd million :-) at least ourselves and Kilkenny and wexford did our 4s without any help from the gaa or government.. We did 2 5s in minor and junior the right way, the fair way. KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 11732 - 08/10/2020 13:24:21 2296405 Link 2 |

3 games but it was still the fair way and uncorrupted by money and played mostly away from home as well. If the kerry senior footballers or any other counties senior footballers ever manage to win the 5 then that will eclipses dublins 5 no doubt.
