Graham Geraghty, what a fantastic player. And like Connolly, was a bit of a maverick. Hated him when he played us ;), but always respected his talent. The game needs these type of players in the game.

A great player, gifted with a beautiful accurate elegant kick, his movement and touch great to watch. Would probably be superb at any ball game, class. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4434 - 05/10/2020 14:00:52 2295811 Link 1 |
He enjoyed incredible success and contributed hugely to it with ultimate skill and at times a bit of venom. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20035 - 07/10/2020 17:15:42 2296282 Link 1 |
As forever young posted on another forum there's a good article in the Examiner two days ago on Connolly by Éamonn Fitzmaurice. Éamonn states his admiration for Connolly for his silken skills but also had his own little story about Diarmuid after the 2017 league final. As Éamonn says both Kerry and Dublin had a tough encounter earlier in the league with tempers rose and Diarmuid was blackcarded early in league final. Anyhow after the game Fitzmaurice was walking down the tunnel after the game happy with Kerry s tight win when he heard someone call his name in a Dublin accent. He turned around expecting a few verbal but it was the outstretched hand of Diarmuid that met him to congratulate him.He said he must have been disappointed with the result and himself but was still gracious enough to offer that lovely gesture. A sportsman he his and hope he has a very happy retirement. CiarraiMick (Dublin) - Posts: 630 - 07/10/2020 18:45:09 2296300 Link 7 |
I see Ciaran Whelan making the point that he thinks Connolly still has a lot to offer Dublin and I agree with him. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 1076 - 16/10/2020 13:07:04 2298027 Link 0 |
It is no coincidence that within days of Dublin being back training that Connolly retires... Did you see him in the Dublin SFC this year... he was well off the pace.... Some nice passes but overall very little impact compared to what you would expect of him. He had some niggling injuries and my guess is that he would not have made any significant impact this year at all. Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 3309 - 16/10/2020 13:19:05 2298032 Link 0 |
Connolly was a special talent - received dogs abuse both on (club and county) and off the field. Personally I think the incident in Carlow ruined him. Never the same after that....! The abuse he got afterward was completely ott. On a side note - as someone else mentioned - only 2 All Stars. wtf????? Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 3309 - 16/10/2020 13:23:22 2298036 Link 1 |
One of the greatest I've ever seen. I was at the semi-final vs Kerry where he scored off his left at full pelt and didn't break stride to put Dublin two up. Granted, Kerry should have had a free at the other end a minute before (but let's not tread over old ground!) but Connolly's point was possibly the best score I've ever seen in person. What a player JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1125 - 16/10/2020 13:33:04 2298045 Link 2 |
Let's be honest unless you have an outstanding semi-final and final you're not guaranteed an All-Star. I've no doubt there are a couple of seasons where Connolly probably played well all year and then Lee Keegan shut him down on All-Ireland final day and then that meant he didn't get an All Star.

Keegan might have dragged him down, he never shut him down though as much as he tried, I seem to remember Keegan getting black carded when the only way he could stop Connolly was to drag him down. I think Connolly didn't get as many All Stars as he deserved because the of the media reputation he had acquired. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 1076 - 16/10/2020 15:02:18 2298092 Link 4 |

Keegan was constantly fouling a class footballer in Diarmuid Connolly in off the ball. fainleog (Limerick) - Posts: 533 - 16/10/2020 15:33:51 2298104 Link 4 |
Lee keegan is a former football player of the year and you're trying to make him out to be some kind of street thug.

Or the courtroom reputation he gained you mean presumably.

Said nothing about how Keegan did it? Legally or not Connolly didn't have an impact on some of those games because of the job Keegan did. Same thing happened to Murphy once or twice with Justy McMahon. Just saying the All Stars are a nonsense anyway and a supposed underperformance on All-Ireland final day counts for way too much. Nothing against Connolly, I said he's one of the greatest I've ever seen in the post before for god sake.
