You'd think that could have easily been checked when the story about the curse first emerged, parish records would have been easy checked, still though you'd have to wonder about Mayo, that clash of heads in Limerick, the 2 own goals in an All Ireland final, so many defeats in finals etc.

We were not good enough on those days...yes some hard luck in there but that's sport. The curse is bull.

Saying there is some supernatural element to a curse is probably nonsense (although having said that the final of the 2 own goals was freekish!) but what is probably the case is that when a team has not won for a long time (and especially if they also have come close a lot of tines) it has a psychological effect which makes it harder to get over the line. The reason being is that previous failures will have be talked about so much down the years and in the final build up that it will be in players heads. Say if Mayo are 3 points ahead with 5 mins left in this year's All Ireland final, all the talk of previous losses will be in their players head and they will know exactly what will be said if they don't close it out. bdbuddah (Meath) - Posts: 768 - 22/09/2020 15:54:06 2293596 Link 1 |
We will probably win the All Ireland this year in an empty Croke Park...it would be the most Mayo thing that could happen...in a year where we couldn't be there and no being able to celebrate properly.

When you consider how many counties have won very few all Ireland's it would be easy to come up with stories of curses for them too if you wanted but there's generally a very straight forward reason for the lack of success. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 1647 - 23/09/2020 11:59:09 2293730 Link 0 |
No such thing as curses. Sport is a cruel business and you make your own luck to get the win, provided you also have the players and the talent, fitness, brains, brawn, and know-how on and off the pitch. These things very, very rarely come together all at once. To blame shortcomings on curses is the refuge of a loser who cant face facts.
