How will rest of league play out? If Galway were to beat Mayo and Dubs, presume there's no final and they win it outright. steakknife (Galway) - Posts: 15 - 17/09/2020 13:33:53 2292683 Link 1 |
if Galway (or anyone else are top) after the 7 round of games then they're league champions. No finals this year.

The way it should be. No reason for needless finals. Only a few years ago they had semi finals which is farcical. A team topping the 'league' should be crowned champions. Simple as that. If you want a playoff between 2nd and third to see who gets promotion, fair enough.

I agree. Sure they have the hurling league routines with all that convoluted crap and it's gets them nowhere in the end. The diehards don't like it but show up anyway and the fairweathers show no interest no matter what way you change it. There's always this fear of meaningless matches but what harm is that if it means you can blood the odd young fella in the secondary competition Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1106 - 18/09/2020 12:47:46 2292887 Link 0 |

Why would you have a play off between 2nd and 3rd. Is the team that earned second spot and a promotion place not as entitled to that spot as 1st place.

The 'back-door' system was first introduced in 1997. Offaly were the first team to benefit from it in 1998. After losing to Kilkenny in the Leinster Final, the went on to beat the same team in the AI Final.

Yes in hurling. The back door system was first introduced in football in 2001.Galway won the All Ireland football championship through the back door in 2001.They Lost in Connacht to Roscommon but Galway came back to beat Roscommon in the quarter final and to beat the Royal county of Meath in the Final.

He/she never stated they were talking just about football. They stated football and hurling.

In fairness and I'm not being argumentative, but surely when you read "Interesting, because it's the first time since the back door system was introduced in 2001 there won't be one, it's on a knock out basis, the preparations this year are not that much different to that of 2001. Galway was the first county to win the All Ireland with the back door in operation," I was specifically referring to Galway, now come on, there's a difference between, - since the back door was introduced, and, - the first time it was introduced. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 2161 - 26/09/2020 21:29:31 2294223 Link 1 |
