Was just reading the article on Pierre Fox scoring 4-12 (24 points) in a Meath Club Championship which the article claims may have set a record for the highest individual score in a club championship game. However, two weekends ago I know there was a higher individual scorer in the Antrim Junior Hurling Championship when Conlaoith 'Loaf' McNeill score 3-19 (28 points) for Cushendun in their win over Loch Mór Dál gCais, topping the Fox's return by 4 points (and 6 scores). That's some scoring on both accounts but Jesus, what kind of opposition must they have been up against. You'd hardly score any more if you were left out on your own for an hour. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 1647 - 20/08/2020 11:31:17 2288375 Link 1 |

I seem to remember John Heslin scoring a ridiculous 2-15 or something like that in a Westmeath club championship match. Maybe the Lake County men can clarify? Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 7075 - 20/08/2020 13:12:03 2288394 Link 0 |

I remember a guy at our club scored a point in a home game, but there was some debate about it among the other team's spectators as the ball was kicked so high that it was above the uprights. "Was it between the uprights?" muttered a few people. I don't know what the rule on that is, but the score stood. Anyway, it was the highest score I ever seen. essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 796 - 20/08/2020 19:31:39 2288455 Link 5 |
You are correct, JR. Not wishing to detract from Heslin's astonishing achievement but it should be noted that 12 of his 16 points came from frees. Having said that, 2-4 from play was fair going. Accurate free-taking is very important, especially in the modern game, but I always feel that we should give more credit to scores from play. Frankie Stockwell scored 2-5 from play in Galway's All-Ireland win over Cork in 1956 (a 60 minute game} while Frank McGuigan scored 0-11 from play against Armagh in the 1984 Ulster final. Will we ever see these achievements bettered in high profile games?

9.23 to 1.2 - the bigger question is, who was the cause of the goal at the other end? zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 982 - 21/08/2020 02:12:52 2288491 Link 0 |
When Limerick's Andrew O'Shaughnessy was still a minor, he got national attention for some amazing individual scoring exploits. I don't remember the exact details but I think that in the space of a week he racked up massive scores (in the region of 4-10) in a county minor semi-final and final and a Harty cup match. Mattie Forde scored nine from play and one sideline out of a total of 0-12 when Wexford beat Meath in Croker in 2006. Not many men have scored nine points from play in championship in Croker either before or since.

Not necessarily at monumental score but the minor county final was on in Waterford Wednesday night ballygunner beat abbeyside 1-13 0-14, read and heard conflicting reports but a player called Paddy Fitzgerald scored 1-11 or 1-12 of ballygunners total, Derek McGrath was saying he's a 1st cousin on the mahony's and underage for the age group again next year, 1 to look out for in the future. wexico15 (Wexford) - Posts: 2602 - 22/08/2020 01:49:38 2288631 Link 0 |

I had the pleasure of watching that game, it was the county minor final v Na Piarsaigh (not exactly sure what year but wouldve been early 2000's) he scored 4-9 of 4-11 if I remember correctly, it was an incredible performance. Back then the minor final was always on before the senior final and was a great day out. Kilmallock won the game by a score or two - it wasnt as if they hammered Na Piarsaigh - he was on a different level, 2 county players from Na Piarsaigh had a go at marking him to no avail.
