It's no longer the trend that teams have a pair of Long sleeve Jerseys, even during winter months. Skins or Under Armour under a short sleeve Jersey a kind of replacement. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 28/07/2020 11:40:29 2285533 Link 2 |
In today's world of "being ripped", with "abs" and "guns" the long sleeved jerseys don't fit in with the sleeve tattoo look and the "I spend more time doing weights than you do and only take water on my porridge" fad.

They were horrible to be fair. Was glad to see the back of them. Give me a short sleeve shirt with a L/s baselayer any cold day. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 979 - 28/07/2020 13:00:28 2285555 Link 0 |

A jersey that's too tight would be uncomfortable of course. But a jersey that fits well is much better to play in than something very baggy with loads of extra material. Some of the older jerseys were like a parachute on a very windy day. :)

They were baggy alright, but they would be able to design a better fit long sleeve jersey nowadays. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 28/07/2020 13:43:33 2285569 Link 0 |
I don't think it is about vanity, skins just don't take on water half as badly as long sleeve jerseys. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 864 - 28/07/2020 13:44:37 2285570 Link 0 |
One reason for the tight jerseys in football especially is to make them harder for opponents to grab. Base layers are better than longsleeve because multi layers are better than one heavy top for retaining heat. Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1106 - 28/07/2020 21:25:38 2285625 Link 1 |
St Kierans college wear long sleeve jerseys still only one I can think of. ceatharlach.abu (Carlow) - Posts: 24 - 28/07/2020 22:01:50 2285629 Link 0 |
If it's lashing rain it would be better for the player to be in the short sleeve,at least that's what I'd think. Maybe some of you younger lads who are still playing have a thought on this?

I remember long-sleeved jerseys, certainly at club level, in the 1970s but not much after that. I have old pictures of my Dad's team, 1930s and 1940s, club and county, and mostly long-sleeved. Certainly the ones I remember in the 70s were heavy, baggy and you could have used them as a tow-rope, they were that strong. The thing that strikes me most about older jerseys is tha lack of sponsorship; always looks far better without it. essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 796 - 29/07/2020 09:25:50 2285647 Link 0 |
as a former corner back i loved the long sleeve, could get a little tug on the elbow part and the referee might not notice. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3841 - 29/07/2020 12:45:20 2285670 Link 0 |
I think you're right on all points. Would it be fair to say the tight fit trend started with Armagh around 2002? Suas Sios (None) - Posts: 1415 - 29/07/2020 14:51:05 2285697 Link 0 |
I thought so to with Armagh but was afraid to say it cause I wasn't sure. It was just starting to become a thing in rugby round the same time look at Brian O'Driscoll in 2001 where he looks like a kid who stole his dad's top compared to about 2005 Was there a thing for cutting sleeves even shorter a while back too or am I dreaming that? Trevor Giles started cutting the sleeves for a while. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 29/07/2020 17:14:26 2285734 Link 0 |
Trevor Giles wore a jersey with no sleeves at all (similar to Aussie Rules) for a while. The rest of the Meath team had the standard short sleeves. Not sure what his reason for it was. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 875 - 29/07/2020 17:30:56 2285738 Link 0 |
