Under GDPR I don't think a casual forum can ask for passports or other personal information, nor would they want to. You are only supposed to hold information necessary and relevant to the service you are providing.

Gambling is a highly regulated sector and is therefore different, they need to do that to ensure children aren't signing up for accounts etc.

There's a difference between a site taking your ID and it being displayed on a forum. People can keep their anonymity when posting providing Hoganstand have verified they don't have multiple accounts. Plenty of sites take ID verification to verify a user's age. They don't share the info unless the user opts in to share info for marketing reasons to be contacted by third party.

We have to decide whether we really want to stop users with multiple accounts, to stop trolling and abuse and how we could do that. ID verification is one way. Just my opinion.

Huge difference between a web discussion forum and a gambling website with huge transactions daily.
moderators have capabilities to check IP addresses etc to stop people using multiple accounts do they not?

That's true I'd say. But they need to find some way of verifying accounts I think. Tracking IPs won't do it. GDPR is important but I cynically think it's a money spinner for some and promotes fearmongering about Internet security for people who are less tech savvy. EU governments should drive free Internet education so people are more aware of any dangers. Plus there were many who had more concerns about GDPR than COVID19 when the COVID tracing app was being developed. I'd rather take my chances with GDPR.

They can try and check IP adresses alright. Wouldn't help them track multiple accounts who post from same IP from different locations or can hide their IP. A waste of time. Need to verify that the poster is who they claim to be.

Thats going too far though,

Its going too far in privacy terms.

Listen Ormond. Nobody, absolutely nobody except you seems to keep track of red and green thumbs. I have never liked or disliked a comment on here. I forget they are there. If getting rid of them stops you talking about it then I support you 100 per cent. These threads are painful.

Privacy v Trolling/Mutiple Accounts per person/ Abusive posting.

For me privacy is overrated if transparency results in a better forum.

It's easy to complain and ask for improvements but you do not know what resources are available to the owners and while it would improve the site if they were able to eliminate some rubbish and certain contributors multiply identities I suspect it's easier said than done.

How many forums do as you propose this site to do?
Just close the whole forum and use facebook for it then
You would have a much better forum if it looked and acted like nearly all other forums with the features that all those have that here does not

Is the website not a magazine etc and have income from ads through there.
Many other smaller forums are updated more often and modernised. So why cant this site?
What contributors have multiple identities?

Income doesn't necessarily mean you are wealthy.
Yeah, I'll give you the names of those with more than one username so you can ask me to prove this. Wise up will you ?

I think I've been using the forum in one form or another since 2001 (consuming for years, before actually contributing), and there's something re-assuring about the consistency of its layout/usability. The lack of bells and whistles tends to make it a more straightforward user experience, for me at least. But to each their own, obviously.
I think conversations naturally tend to get a bit unfocused when there's no inter-county activity, its a GAA forum, thats to be expected. And this year has been like no other, and we're all in a weird headspace. But when inter-county competitions start, the threads become better and more diverse, conversation improves, and things stay on topic more.

The issue of users with multiple accounts is an issue, but I think any verification of identity might discourage people from using the site. Typically when the same user starts posting with multiple accounts, they write in the same style, people cop on to it, and it works itself out. I think.

Can you say boards.ie or leinsterfans or gaaboards.com or https://kerrygaa.proboards.com/board/2/general-board are not straightforward to use.
There is straightforward to use and there is very basic. This site is very basic. Doesnt have any features that aid discussions and make better User Experience.

No, I can't say those sites are not straightforward to use, why would I? I don't use them, but I'm sure they're fine sites, and more power to anyone supporting independent communication platforms.
My post was just about my experience with this site, hence why I explicitly said "more straightforward user experience, for me at least. But to each their own, obviously." I wasn't saying that this site is more or less straightforward than any other site, just an independent impression of my experience here, all other things being equal.

I've also being using this site for 19 years (yikes), so I'm probably just very used to it. I get why users of other fora would be more used to features they've used there, I just don't have any requirements like that. For me, the only thing that can really aid discussions is how we post ourselves, what attitude we come to the discussion with. And having interesting topics to discuss. Right now, there's a drought, but that'll improve when we get back to the games.
