Replying To KillingFields: "Totally agree. Have been calling for changes for ages The forum is so out of date Instant messages with ability to report posts that go against forum rules. The list of rules are in a thread fixed to the top of each forum. County forums could have slight different rules to take into account issues that would br issues in them that mightnt necessarily be issue on the national forum" Exactly. It's how a forum uses it's moderator resources.
I won't get much hop because I'm new. But it's because I'm coming from other sites I see, for want of a better word, anachronisms. It's like being back around 1997.

And it's a pity as Hoganstand is a good website.
I love the live match score feature and up to date articles.

The Kerry\Dublin 'baiting' would be knocked on the head elsewhere.

I just find so many conversations go down the lowest common denominator gutter.
The Kerry/Dublin rubbish with posters from other counties getting sucked in. It needs to be sorted.
For me it's a simple argument. Dublin have probably the greatest Gaelic football team of all time at the moment. They are to be commended. Is it right to raise questions about financing and population, absolutely. However Con O'Callaghan, Jack McCaffrey, James McCarthy etc are wonderful once in a generation players. They stand like granite against the the teeth of envy. Dublin have current bragging rights.
However Kerry have 37 all irelands to Dublin's 28. They are still the aristocrats in that sense. They have coming talent." Dublin have 29 All Irelands !

Replying To KillingFields: "Have it like other forums and have ads etc that generate income. Most forums have volunteers running, managing the site and can still manage updates, upgrades so why is hoganstand different?" Hoganstand is not a forum site or a charity. It's a GAA news and information site which includes discussion forums and developed from the magazine. There are ads and some sponsors, maybe they could have localised ads to bring in more revenue. But there's not a lot of posts on the forums, a tiny amount compared to other forum sites like Boards, which of course covers a huge range of topics and ru ns 24/7. So they need to calculate if an upgrade will bring more website traffic via the forum so they can attract more advertisers and/or increase rates for advertisers. Maybe look for some localised ad revenue from club sponsors where clubs could also benefit. Moderation could be better as could eliminating posters with multiple accounts. Ultimarely Hoganstand is here to make money, if you think it should be upgraded and it isn't then try setting up uhh our own discussion forum. Could be an improvement.

Did I say it was a charity or otherwise There is plenty of forums with far less posts than here with far better layout, style etc If you changed the format, modernised it you would likely get more people to join as they look at the site now and dont because of it's old and rather poor layout.

Plenty posters from smaller counties contribute. Possibly another change is to remove county under each username. Then you mightnt have as many cliques forming if you dont automatically know what county someone is from and use is as bias against what they post regardless of what they post

You could adopt a few rules of thumb Once a topic goes beyond 3 pages avoid it as its almost certainly gone way off-topic and is now just two lads having a go at one another Avoid political agendered topics and/or usernames, ussens n them uns, ooh ahh up da ra, brit mocking, history lessens (typo is deliberate), virtue signallers, cancellers etc etc If you feel an urge to make a snide comment bear in mind many posters here are of schoolgoing age Don't try and win arguments here Not saying I always follow my own rules...

I think there is a lot to be said for the O.P. This site is a bit "backward" in that it takes too long for posts to appear. There should be instant posts, with mods online to moderate. And a report and edit button. I have stopped going on this site because it is so slow.

It's worth a go Ormond, not sure if it's worth Hoganstand's investment but time will tell. I know feck all about how to setup forums but maybe some posters here could offer free advice to Hoganstand. There are sites like Proboard that you can host your boards on. Not for Hoganstand but could take a few pointers on Admin, security, obscenity filtering etc. But I think also try getting verified ID from posters to help admin ban posters if needed. There's a lot more distractions online in 2020 for potential posters too, Snapchat, TikTok, Whatsapp amongst an ever-increasing list. Maybe even links to online sportswear sites or sports channels? But once you get new posters try and keep them and I think that' D be hard to do now with the state of some discussions.

Splitting hairs. The forum has a problem if the posters are out of control.

There is some privacy that should be maintained. I dont know much on designing a web forum but have some experience of web design and website management and would offer my help If it was needed obscenity filtering is far from a major issue How pages are laid out. You should be able to alter appearance of pages. Alter number of posts that appear on a webpage. Private messaging. Report button for posts you feel go against the rules which would mean posts dont have to be pre moderated

There should be a system in place where if you have written a post and it does not appear there is an explanation given in a private message ie off topic, bad language, potentially defamatory etc etc.
There should be a zoo thread where any slanging matches between posters and the slanging posts are banished to and let them whack away there and anyone who has the energy or patience to view the fun can look at it.
Moderators should have an identifying mark if they are posting.
There is one western forum where it appears to me a poster has at least four different accounts and when someone new posts on it they immediately go on the attack calling names and questioning whether they are actually from that county, Every. Single. Time. Surely some kind of report button can be installed to stop this gross behaviour.
I would bring back the red thumb also.
