Boards Forum Restructuring

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I joined here late last year and find the forum messy to say the least. At the moment most are engaging in tit for tat parochial insulting, myself included. It's turned into a cyclical thing.

Because one poster has gotten under my skin I've insulted Meath, Dublin, Cork and Waterford this week! I have absolutely nothing against any of these counties but we're all being sucked into nonsense. Proper moderation would sort this. There's very little enjoyment of mature discussion. Some ideas for change.

1. Allow instant messaging, no waiting for moderating first. It's caveman stuff waiting on posts to appear. Swear and offensive words can easily be filtered.

2. Carding and bans for those who stray wildly off topic, play the poster instead of replying to the post, insult, make no meaningful contribution, back seat moderate (example suggesting another poster is from another county and has multiple accounts) etc. This can easily be done retrospectively.

3. A report button that can be used to report a post.

4. Moderators to have their status displayed. The site has a reputation of excellent news articles but a forum where some who post frequently are mods but hide behind a username.

5. Anyone who uses the 'what have you won line as a put down gets a one week ban. There's a difference in when the point is used as part of analysis. For example if someone said Offaly hurling is at an all time low and received a reply well actually the 1980s and 1990s were an aberration, as the county hadn't a tradition of winning Leinsters before or after, fair enough.

5. Draw up a proper charter/set of rules posters sign up to initially.

6. Start every poster on a clean slate.

Because as one poster pointed out on a thread this morning, the forum is like Junior Infants. The long slow process of releasing posts needs to go firstly.

Point 7. The ability to edit a post. I obviously mean Hoganstand forum. Very cumbersome structure at the moment.

Find a way to pay for above and how Hoganstand will get a return from that investment before making changes. The site and forum are free but Hoganstand workers don't work for free.

I feel GreenandRed it's no more difficult than the process now being used. Possibly easier when the structure is in place.

Boards.ie has unpaid mods and there system is light years ahead. It feels like the Hoganstand forum is the after thought to a very good information site.

No disrespect to you as I now you're talking about me, but if you want a forum like that Boards.ie is where you should go really. They have everything you have listed above. I'm not saying that in a smart arse way and hope you can understand where I'm coming from.

Personally i find the boards style a bit restrictive for GAA talk in that you don't have subsections within it to discuss club, intercounty, underage etc in the way Hoganstand runs their forum. On boards its more or less one thread to discuss everything Meath/ Kilkenny etc.

As another poster has said Hoganstand doesn't have staff to run what you're looking for. Biards has full time staff and voluntary moderators who run their individual fourms so the things you'd like are there.

7. Have a separate Forum for any Dublin v Kerry related comments to dumped in. Nearly every topic on here eventually ends up in a slanging match between Kerry fans and Dubs.

Seriously though, you raise a lot of good points. My only concerns are:

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater

While this forum has it's faults. I find it's ability to allow frank and sometimes controversial viewpoints and debate, a refuge of free speech in a world where it seems, all debate and contrary opinion to the majority popular opinion is denounced as bordering on heresy.

I use a lot of comment sections and forums, on various topics. But, more and more they are censoring debate, sometimes for dubious and flimsy reasons.

As for the mods, I've found that overall they do a good job, and will remove any comments that are beyond the pale (I've had one or two removed myself).

Basically because I typed out the post quickly. I couldn't edit any errors. Another feature that you don't find on most fora comment features today.

The Journal, the 42, boards, YouTube comments all have instantaneous editing available.

Maybe it's time for Hoganstand to have a proper modern forum or not bother with it at all?

I actually find this forum by far the most censored Cockney Cat. Honestly.

I appreciate your reply though.

It's not about you Brian personally. It could be any username.

I just find so many conversations go down the lowest common denominator gutter.

The Kerry/Dublin rubbish with posters from other counties getting sucked in. It needs to be sorted.

For me it's a simple argument. Dublin have probably the greatest Gaelic football team of all time at the moment. They are to be commended. Is it right to raise questions about financing and population, absolutely. However Con O'Callaghan, Jack McCaffrey, James McCarthy etc are wonderful once in a generation players. They stand like granite against the the teeth of envy. Dublin have current bragging rights.

However Kerry have 37 all irelands to Dublin's 28. They are still the aristocrats in that sense. They have coming talent.

Above would be an example of a post that contributes nothing, it isn't funny. Just an example of a small man pointing out where a better man stumbled. If a poster continued making no contribution they'd get a warning on other sites.

If there was even something humerous about it. In fairness Morty that a statement you'd expect to hear in a home for the bewildered, maybe you are in one.

In rushing up a post on my lunch break I misnumbered my points. As I pointed out you can't edit your post. You can't change the title of a thread you create. Even for a 15 minute window.

Not convinced you're not trolling now comparing resources here to Boards.

How am I trolling?

I can't even change the title of the thread to 'Hoganstand Forum Restructuring'? That type of function doesn't require 'resources'?

Moderating posts after rather than before posting is just a question of timing. You can make excuses for mediocrity all you want.

I do have a slight issue if mods are using usernames as a basis to post. I think that can be easily solved by hoganstand. There is merits to some of ur points , some not so. But I'll give you credit for trying. I've been on here since 02/03. I didn't use the national forum for the first few years and stuck to the Meath one. Clondalkindub, snuff patrique horse etc all had good sessions on here. It was always cutting but I don't think ever went over the line , what I don't like is inconsistency in what's aloud and what's not. I think we seen that recently with a topic, I think the vast majority of people were in favour (myself included)of what Croke park are doing. It wasn't controversial, and those who weren't in favour were imo Not been disrespectful, just having a different opinion doesn't make someone a extreme person.
Anyway that's my take on it.

These are the rules from the KK GAA thread on boards. We could definitely use some of these here

- Personal abuse of anyone be they other posters, players, managers, referees, pundits etc. Any personal abuse will result in an infraction or a ban.

- Rumours about players'/managers'/anyone's personal lives. This should be self explanatory. Apart from being a dickish thing to do, it can lead to legal trouble for Boards.

- Trolling. Again, self explanatory. Trolls will be banned for a long time.

- Accusations of trolling. Report a post if you suspect it to be trolling. Do not call a troll out on thread as this will be considered back seat modding.

- Speculation into the identity of another poster. This is a site-bannable offence.

This list is not exhaustive. Either myself or another mod may add to this as we see fit. Just because a certain behaviour isn't listed, doesn't mean you can't be banned for it.
The general Boards.ie rule of Don't be a Dick always applies.

If you feel a post breaks the rules, simply click this underneath the post in question to report the post and a mod will deal with it as they see fit.

So be civil to each other and happy posting.

Totally agree.
Have been calling for changes for ages
The forum is so out of date
Instant messages with ability to report posts that go against forum rules.
The list of rules are in a thread fixed to the top of each forum.
County forums could have slight different rules to take into account issues that would br issues in them that mightnt necessarily be issue on the national forum

Have it like other forums and have ads etc that generate income.
Most forums have volunteers running, managing the site and can still manage updates, upgrades so why is hoganstand different?
