Should Challenge Matchs Be Banned In Covid Times?

(Oldest Posts First)

Looking at clubs local to me , i have never heard of as many challenge matchs taking place often involving teams from other counties . Now we have covid flare ups like Glantworth , cork etc which could derail championships.
Should clubs not have been content to get to play their county championship rather than drawing all these other games into the mix increasing covid risks.

I'd apply this answer to more than just GAA, but;

Now that the recommendations allow for games to be played, you shouldn't criticize clubs for playing games. They aren't breaking any rules.

When there was no restrictions made by the GAA there was always going to be challenges.

There definatley should not have been any challenges until the new covid protocols were put in place. There has been challenge matches going on and dug outs being used etc

Ones from other counties certainly seem unnecessary right now

Not to play challenge matches would be madness and asking for a huge injury crisis. Players need to build up to playing competitive games, most of the first challenge matches are timid affairs with intensity ramping up over a few weeks.

The comment about restricting matches within counties makes no sense either. My own club have played challenge matches against teams from Tipp and Clare, a large chunk of the players from Clare / Tipp work in Limerick and cross county borders all the time.

My issue is with the closure of dressing rooms - players sitting in a car for 45 mins after being soaked in sweat / rain are surely more likely to get sick than by washing in dressing rooms. they've already played contact sport with the lads they would be in the dressing room with, risk of contracting something indoors surely not as high as when you are tangling with an opponent during a games.

Friendlies need to happen. Cant not have them. Without them there is greater chance of injury.
Number of subs in competitive games should also increase to help reduce chances of injury.

I agree challenges are needed but I think some teams are overdoing it. Three challenges in a week is not necessary and has potential to wipe out a lot of teams from just one case.

Clubs should have been happy to have their championships not having all these extra challenge matchs . A game between your own panel should be adequate .

Getting wet does not make you sick.
I really wish people would stop with that old wives tale

Spot on about players shiver g for 45 mins, a flu risk too. Some lads with cars can bring a towel and a change of clothes. Turn on the car heater, take wet gear off, dry themselves as well as they can and put on a set of clothes to get them warm again. It's often been done and prevents contact in dressing rooms with team-mates coughing. Off home and straight into the shower avoiding anyone else in the house until they've cleaned up.
