Dean Rock Free Taking Project

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I am literally at a loss for words to see that Dean Rock is launching his own free taking business for juveniles and adults and charging for it. Totally against the ideology of the game being amateur but i suppose we all forgot about that a long time ago especially with the GPA paying for the likes of Jason Sherlock and Dessie Farrell to complete MBA's in DCU.

In the current climate i feel this is most distasteful and you would think that someone from the GAA needs to step in here.

Shocking. Was his lack kick of a ball(last year) not a wide under pressure from a free in an All Ireland Final?

Not sure but in 2017 he landed a massive last second pressure kick to win an AI final whilst having a GPS thrown at him by an opponent. Pressure moments don't come much more pressurised than that.

Fair play, hopefully its successful, innovative idea, ive no problem with lads making a few bob out of the game. Every second day lads are endorsing some product or other and giving sound bytes, then you have lads releasing books, designing clothes ranges, and having testimonials or whatever. I dont see this as being different to be honest. He does plenty of voluntary work, while the clubs up here are committed to a strong self funded investment in GPO and GDO's, this just looks like a supplement to that if people are interested, be interesting to see if there is a market for it. Hope it works out Deano.

Not ideal but coaches have been going around charging clubs and people for courses for years.

The Gaa themselves charge clubs to run foundation coaching courses. Dean Rock will be upskilling anyone that attends his free taking project like any couch will be upskilled when they attend a Coaching course. Why should one require a fee and the other not?

Fair play to the lad. Make hay while the sun shines. It's no different to any GAA lad cashing in on their name.... Colm Coopers Testimonial, Lee Chin for just being the GAA legend that he is. A complete non story.

Where does it say he's charging for courses? Best of luck to him even if he is. Plenty of coaches, physios, psychologists etc making money from the GAA

It was tongue in cheek. He's kicked many great frees and is the best around.

But you don't see Ryan Mc Hugh giving a workshop on palmed goals and charging a fee during a bloody pandemic of all things.

Hundreds of GPA members have received scholarships. But you just mention 2 from Dublin and also have a go at Dean Rock. Now why is that?

Nobody would pay to see Ryan McHugh give a workshop. If they would he might.

Rory Beggan ran a goalkeepers camp in 2015 not sure if it has taken place since. It was 7 euro a session. Monaghan Gaa advertised it on their facebook page. Don't recall any outcry at the time. Maybe if he was a Dublin player you would have had an issue. Below is what was on facebook. More luck to a load who can earn a few pound from their talent.

My aul wan can palm a goal but she can't kick a 50 yard last minute free to win an AI final in front of 82,000 Fans with a GPS being flung at her.

Paul Durcan ran a goalkeeping course in Dublin a few years ago.

Conor McDonald has ran the 'Conor McDonald School of Hurling' over recent summers, which sells out quicker than a Garth Brooks concert. Although not sure if he has done one lately.

I have no issue with Rock holding one. If anything he is giving back to the game. I wonder is there any other inter-county forward holding a workshop in contributing more from play that Deano himself could attend?

Can't see any problem with this. Kevin Cassidy had something similar going up here where he'd invite clubs to come to Gweedore and do some coaching sessions which I'm sure weren't free.

I think its his own business what he does. Sure don't people pay for their kids to go to the Cùl Camps. It was too long ago there was a crowd charging 200euro for All Star hurleys to show up at birthday parties for a puck around.
Players make enough sacrifices, if there's people willing to pay for these things what's the harm?
