A smashing player!
Pity to see him go.
Big loss to Limerick....and to Hurling.

Loved watching Shane hurl. He did instinctive, slightly unorthodox things in matches that you just know were the natural product of hours of practice, experimenting, messing around with a hurley and ball trying new things.

A huge loss to Limerick hurling. Great role model on and off the pitch.

I do laugh when I see a player such as Shane retire, some so called knowledgable hurling people say "I dont really remember much of him (some people never saw this current Limerick squad gelling together over the last 5/6 years, hard to believe if you follow all hurling around the country) I like many on here thought he was an great hurler, he suffered with injuries and Limerick having a very strong panel, Limerick I always thought "rotated" players alot, you could not say any player not named on the team never seemed to hit the ground running when brought on and everyone was saying "how did he not start" etc. but thats the joys of a large strong panel, and it keeps lads grounded etc. Shane Dowling always seemed to have that bit of bite when introduced, he had an great stroke of the ball, and could point from literally anywhere on the field, and a 21 yard free or a penalty (if he took them) was always a pile driver...he will be a loss no doubt to Limerick, but as one Dublin footballer said when Jack McCaffrey opted out this year, it will be a chance for another player and indeed that players understudy...a pity to loose Shane Dowling, but so be it..he has an All Ireland medal, something manys the great Limerick men over the last 40 years were so unfortunate not to get...Shane can retire somewhat happy no doubt..
