You would forget sometimes just how big the big 3 are

Sorry, Waterford achieved that in 1959 and not 57. Of course only fifteen Hurling titles have gone South, apart from those won by Cork or Tipp, so maybe the stat is not that amazing.

Galway beat Tipp and Kilkenny in 87 and 88 I believe.

They did in 87, but in 88 it was Offaly they beat in the semi-final (and Tipp in the final).

Did they beat Cork that year?

Oh ok you meant all three in one year. I doubt it.

We never achieved that. 2005 was the closest for us I believe. After beating Tipp in the q/f and KK in the s/f a seasoned Cork overpowered us in the final.

Yeah you're right. I thought we'd win that one. Sigh.

Obviously the format is different now but in 2018 we also beat Waterford and Galway which is some achievement

The two finalists from the previous year.

Ah, 2018... From a sports point of view the best year of my life. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that we'd win the All Ireland that year. I would have been happy with getting out of 1B and winning a few games in Munster. skillet (Limerick) - Posts: 710 - 08/07/2020 12:20:05 2283454 Link 1 |
I prefer 2017 thank you. Ha ha ha.

Yes as it was a long time coming. I was watching with a Waterford lad when we won and I truly felt bad for him.

I hear you. If ever you'd want a county to win an All Ireland it's Waterford. I was so neutral in 2017 Cos I was genuinely delighted for whoever won... I think that's why beating Cork, Tipp or kilkenny means so much more because when you win something against them you really feel like you've earned it. Beating Cork in the semi final in 2018 even now gives me a buzz..we'd suffered so many bad beatings over the years from them. skillet (Limerick) - Posts: 710 - 08/07/2020 14:20:36 2283480 Link 1 |
Yeah there were times when Cork beat us in Hurling where I felt we had the better team but they were always such masters on the day. They just knew HOW to win.

Is that just telling me what I already know as i did not suggest otherwise in my post. Am not trying to be smart or anything just wondering.

Me as well. Great to win after 29 years but when the team you beat also has a great need you do feel for them. Also Waterford have contributed handsomely to some great hurling games in the last 20 odd years so unlucky not to have pulled an all Ireland.
