TG4 yet again leading the way with this new series showing a highlights package of the years gone by . 1980 highlights showing this week. Great to see games outside of that years All Ireland Finals. hurler32 (Limerick) - Posts: 845 - 15/06/2020 20:58:58 2280969 Link 0 |
Great show but they could do with showing some other classic games, Wexford v Waterford in 2001/2002/2003 was supposed to be a classic but it has never been shown! StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 864 - 16/06/2020 12:55:19 2281027 Link 0 |
Yes Roscommon had lost 3 All-Ireland semi finals in a row so they were under big pressure to get by Armagh in 1980.5 points down at half time, Ros turned it around in the second half to win by 6.Unlucky to lose narrowly to Kerry in the Final. That was the end of Roscommon's second greatest team.Well beaten by Galway in the 1981 League Final and defeated by Sligo in the '81 Connacht championship ending their bid for 5 in a row in Connacht.

Some handy footballers on that team. Wayward shooting cost them in the final. Even the great Dermot was culpable. Wouldn't have begrudged them an All Ireland!

Back in the 80s I wrote to RTE Sports asking if it'd be possible to get a VHS tape of the 1980 All Ireland Hurling final. No DVDs or streaming in those days kids. A Christmas present for the Da. For a modest fee they duly obliged. I like to think some young TV exec had a lightbulb moment which he then took to TG4 when it started up and All Ireland Gold was born. So, y'see its all down to me. I should get royalties, even a dinner date with Mairéad Ní Chuaig Maroonatic (Galway) - Posts: 947 - 18/06/2020 10:54:07 2281180 Link 4 |
