Greatest Goals

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Agree with Beano there. I think Canavan's goal in 05 was the greatest goal i have ever seen anyway.

One of the reasons i think is because not a single other player in the country could have placed the ball where he did, with enough power to beat the keeper and perfectly into the corner with his 'weaker' foot. Just everything was pure finesse and perfection.

I was coaching the under 12s in the club for a few years and used to show them photos of how Canavan kicked the ball. Still to this day, ive not seen anybody with a better kicking technique than him. Clifford is not far off however.

Greatest goal - Mulligan v Dublin - full house, against the Dubs etc , big game
Greatest point - Dooher v Kerry in 2008 final

I saw Benny Coulter score a magic goal for Down v Carlow in Dr Cullen Park in the Championship but there wasn't many there, and Brogan i think for Mayo v Dublin in 1985 and Jamie Clarke scored a cheeky goal v Tipp 2 yrs ago but Mulligan goal is no 1

Yeah I think you've applied the right criteria there - importance within the game, skill involved, size of the occasion etc.

Mulligan's is always the first that springs to mind when someone mentions a great goal. That Dooher point was absolutely incredible too.

Canavans goal was a decent finish when the stakes were at their highest but that is it. You are wearing Tyrone tinted glasses i think!

-Mikey Sheehys goal was a combination of great skill in the finish, audaciousness, awareness and in a high stakes game
-Declan Meehans goal was a spectacular finish in a high stakes game but also had an amazing build up (galway tinted glasses!)
-Shane Walsh scored a point against Tipperary in a qualifier that was unbelievable (if we are including points). Wasn't an AI final but have a look. Controlled a mis hit 45 on his instep, swiveled and tapped over the bar. https://youtu.be/kyJmJOe04J8

On the basis of not voting for my own county to be independent.....Sheehys goal was iconic. We have all seen it even though it was late 70's

Nah! Darby's goal was far more iconic that Sheehy's. Jack O'Shea's goal in the '81 final was quality; how football should be played! That goal is head, hands and shoulders above the Mikie Sheehy one that you're on about!

One of the best goals I ever saw was from Michael Moyles versus Galway in the Connacht Championship back in 2002. Ball broke to Mayo from the throw in and he ran a short distance before smashing the ball past Alan Keane into the top corner from 25 metres out.

A great finish. I remember being up in Castlebar for that. I believe that's the game in which Mortimer missed a 20m free in front of the posts, which would have put Mayo ahead late on. Joyce went up the up other end and kicked us in front. All seemed well in Galway football at the time, but that was a good as it was going to get for a long time. We were very lucky to win that game. Mayo were on top for most of the match, but kicked it away.

i remember that point. it was unreal! You may be right with 07 - was that the game he had a goal disallowed too? Unfairly I may add

For me, the best goal I've seen - has to be Mulligan against us in the QF in 2005. Period!! Heartbreaking stuff... but i was in awe. The turn, the pace, the dummies....the finish!!! WOW!

Another one for me that's right up there, and i don't know if anyone has mentioned it previously, is Con O Callaghan's goal in the first minute of the All Ireland Final 2017 V Mayo. The technique he showed to just roll the ball past the keeper into the corner with the outside of his right boot whilst all along showing the strength to hold off Colm Boyle, i thought it was a thing of beauty. And to think it was his first ever appearance in an All Ireland Final. A star was born.

I think u right. That point in my opinion was the best I have ever seen. And that's not just my bias. I actually didn't appreciate it as much at the game (knew it was a excellent score) but Only when I saw the match later u couldn't actually see a way he could score from that position, yet he did
