Wouldn't have considered the paper as great for constructive GAA views but the articles compiled for each county , province and today national of top 20 players for each code is a excellent weeks reading . OpenStand (Limerick) - Posts: 293 - 30/05/2020 10:50:41 2279503 Link 2 |
Not being Unionist, I don't read the "Irish" "Independent". What's the list?

JJ Delaney is the best defender of all time. Joe McKenna was better than Ray Cummins. Is a very good list..few arguments.

I agree Openstand . It was a great concept and it was really well done . They compiled the top twenty footballers for each county, for each province and then today for the country going back to 1970. They did the same for hurling but confined it to the counties that have competed for the Liam NcCarthy on a meaningful basis . I did something this week that I haven't done for many years and that is buy a newspaper every day since Monday . I stopped buying newspapers years ago because I became and remain hugely disillusioned by what masquerades as journalism at national level in Ireland . This was a great concept however and it was really well done . I've taken screen shots of a lot of the teams . They'll be produced when our local hostelries reopen and they'll be the source of animated debate .

I'm going to go away and have a think about the two lists but I agree with you about JJ. Tommy Walsh won All Stars at left corner back, left half back, right half back, midfield and left half forward . Nobody but nobody comes anywhere near that . I also think Stephen Cluxton at number four in the football list is ranked way too high when you consider James McCarthy and Brian Fenton are only at 18 and 19. I would have those two higher and Cluxton in at 19 or 20.

In all fairness in terms of backs, seanie McMahon, Brian Corcoran and pat hartigan were not better than JJ Delaney. As simple as that In terms of goalkeepers, Noel Skehan was not better than Damien Fitzhenry or Eoin Murphy. Joe Cooney better by 7 places than TJ? Don't think so. And no Michael fennelly. I saw Noel Skehan in every All Ireland final he played from 1972 on . I saw plenty of Damien Fitzhenry and Eoin Murphy . In my opinion and it is only my opinion based on what I saw and what I remember Noel Skehan was a better keeper than either Eoin Murphy or Damien Fitzhenry.

Not everyone reads the Irish Independent or wants to pay €120 a year to read it online.

There is more than one paper you know or were you aware of that. There is more than one tv station too.

Martin Breheny in the Irish Independent, not sure if it's his own personal list or if he received input from colleagues.

Brian Whelehan has to be top of the list and Eoin Kelly has to be in top 7 at a minimum. Paudie Maher also gets into the top 20 without a shadow of a doubt tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 2911 - 31/05/2020 16:24:09 2279598 Link 1 |
Picking the 20 best footballers is a difficult task and the result depends more on the guy who picks it. You could easily add another 20 who are as good. A few who come to mind! G. Geraghty, J. Eagan, J. B. Murphy. Big Donaghy who at his best was unbeatable, I could go on. Brian McGuigan senior who could play at midfield, CF and FF has to be up there with the best and exceptionally skill full who could score equally well with either foot taking the normal abuse of the day . He scored 11 points from play in an Ulster final against Armagh -not sure of the year (late 70's early 80's-on youtube). Every county has had some very good footballers, some with a higher profile which helps the media. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2189 - 03/06/2020 13:02:33 2279809 Link 6 |
You are talking about Frank McGuigan browncows. He was the father of Brian and Tommy . The match you are talking about is the Ulster Final of 1984.

I probably couldn't put Frank McGuigan on a list of the 20 best players of the last 50 years. He lived in the States for 6 years between the ages of 22-28, and a car crash ended his career when he was 30. Certainly there were many moments of exceptional brilliance when he was at home, but it would be unfair to rank him ahead of some other all-time greats in terms of accomplishments over a full career. TJ Reid is obviously brilliant but am I the only one who thinks he's not top 20 of the last 50yrs brilliant? Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1106 - 04/06/2020 09:54:41 2279869 Link 1 |
