Does The GAA Have Too Many MEANINGLESS Matches?

Replying To Trump2020:  "Then by your logic why not play 200 games rather than 82....but hey I say the same thing about baseball but it's different as in their regular season is too long in my opinion. 162 games. How many times must you play other teams to get a seeding or playoff spot? Deep down it's all to do with money."
They do play a lot but its because they can. Baseball is not very intensive on the body so players can play over and over. Why is that an issue. Yes it gets more money but if people weren't turning up they would cut games.

True I suppose. Let the Market decide.

Something really simple that could work for the GAA and be exciting.

Championship 1: 14 team single round robin. Top 6 to playoffs. Bottom 3 relegated.

Championship 2: 18 teams each playing a 12 round schedule. 8 to playoffs. Finalists promoted, losing semifinalists playoff for remaining promotion place.

It takes 16 weekends to run it all off.

April, May, June, July, August for league stage
September for playoffs

There should be 8 break weekends. 2 in each of April, May, June, July for club games to be scheduled through the summer.

Club championships get completed once the county teams are finished.

February and March for Provincial and All Ireland club competitions.

Too many unrealistic proposals on this forum. Just split the counties into 2 tiers of 16 if we're going to have a tiered championship. 4 groups of 4. Top 2 into the knockout stage and the finalists get promoted. The format is simple and easy to follow. It's used for most county championships and works just fine.

What's unrealistic about the above?

It's simple, easy to understand.

Easy to schedule club games around.

Gives all county players a good season also.

Replying To Trump2020:  "One glaring difference between the GAA and other leagues are the amount of meaningless matches. In most leagues every match counts as it can be the difference between getting to your sports playoffs or even relegation.

The word "meaningless" may be a bit harsh and many people might get annoyed but let's face it the attendances got some of these matches is pathetic.

Examples of MEANINGLESS matches: the League, the Walsh Cup, etc. Even though the League can be a useful tool in preparing for the Championship it's still loaded with meaningless matches. Do the weaker teams get better because they just went through a League schedule?!? Not really. Kilkenny are still Kilkenny and Leitrim is still Leitrim, etc.

Combine the League and Championship in some kind of SMART way and then you'll see attendances improving due to the matches having some meaning."
If we compare it to English soccer.

The Championship is the equivalent of the premier league

The national league is the equivalent of the FA Cup

The Walsh Cup or whatever is the equivalent of the League Cup.

All have their place and all have their function. They are not meaningless

There is no desire for a long drawn out league followed by a short knockout stage. Hurling, camogie, and ladies football all use the same format. I know Donegal will oppose any format like the ones you've proposed.

It's much less drawn out than the current season.

If you want to split hairs even a challenge match isn't meaningless as maybe someone gets to start that normally wouldn't and blossoms from then on but I'm mean meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Just revert back to the old Division 1A/1B and 2A/2B format with the top 4 in each pool advancing to the All-Ireland series.
