Most Intercounty Appearances?

(Oldest Posts First)

Lads, does anyone know of a player to have anymore appearances than our county man? Johnny Nevin played 331 competitive games for carlow across both codes. I have my doubts.

Jesus how is that possible? Andy Moran played over 150 times for Mayo...not sure of this final tally number.

Johnny was a dual star. His Wikipedia page is a good read, recently edited by the Mexican Axel Arias!

I was dubious but the impeccably researched GAA Statistics book on Carlow has the following for Nevin:

Football Championship-34 Appearances
Hurling Championship-27 Appearances
Football League-107 Appearances
Hurling League-84 Appearances

So an impressive total of 252 league and championship appearances between 1989 and 2006.

Presumably the remaining 79 games are O'Byrne/Kehoe cup but that's always a sketchy one to count with colleges, club championships, teams not taking part etc.

You would have to play both codes and you'd have to be good enough to start in both codes. You'd have to be lucky enough to not get major injuries. And your fitness and dedication would need to be phenomenal.

Colm Morris played 164 times for Wexford, which was a record until Brian Malone overtook him in the league recently before covid-19.

I think for any player to reach over 100 appearances for their county is commendable, but even more so when you play outfield, especially for a lower ranked team that aren't exactly challenging for honours. It's easier for Cluxton, as an example, to rack up appearances.

The stats were given to me by a man who does work for multiple national papers, and programmes for games upto every level. Top man.
