A bit rose tinted there with Stephen Bray. I wouldn't have Whelan, Keenan or Glynn either. Good idea though. Dermot Early, John Galvin, Ciaran McDonald, Meehan, Coulter, Andy Moran, Corkery, Glen Ryan, Lockhart to name a few more in the mix. It's an embarrassment. How could Kerry provide 66% of the best defenders of the last 40 years, and still feel the need to add phrases like 'puke football' to the sporting lexicon of the country? Tyrone taught three of them all about defending in 2003 & 2005, and then added insult to injury by handing out another lesson in 2008. No Tyrone defenders? 4 Kerry defenders? Someone having a laugh there? Was this a 'public vote' conducted on 'Radio Kerry'?

No disrespect to players chosen as all are decent players but some of the picks are highly questionable. I am from Meath but surely Martin O'Connell should be chosen in half backline. His record and footballing ability couldn't be questioned not to mention he was selected on team of the millennium. Three O'Se's in the backs is overkill from a Kerry point of view. Mick Lyons surely best full back while Bob O'Malley, Ricey McMenemin or Conor Gormley may deserve a corner-back slot. Ironically probably would have had Darragh O'Se, Tohill, Buckley or McDermott ahead of Fenton who I think has a bit to do. McGeeney surely at center-back ahead of Keegan. Understand the team is picked and voted for online so younger generation would have a stronger vote. Looks like Kerry folk voted in their droves.

Paddy would be in my team all day long. Here is my starting team of players that never won All Irelands and just to add a bit of spice I picked 15 players from different counties. It was a tough one but one which I enjoyed doing. 1. Brendan Mc Veigh (Down) 2. Joe Higgens (Laois) 3. Kevin Mc Cloy (Derry) 4. Barry Owens (Fermanagh) 5. Charlie Harrison (Sligo) 6. Donal Keoghan (Meath) 7. Francie Grehan (Roscommon) 8. Paddy Keenan (Louth) 9. John Galvin (Limerick) 10. Declan Browne (Tipp) 11. Cillian O Connor (Mayo) 12. Johnny Doyle (Kildare) 13. Conor McManus (Monaghan) 14. John Heslin (Westmeath) 15. Mattie Forde (Wexford) Ollie2 (Louth) - Posts: 221 - 19/05/2020 20:03:16 2278739 Link 1 |
That's a great team Ollie and a serious jigsaw puzzle. I gave it a go, plenty of forwards and mids left out and a feeling I'm missing an obvious Tyrone or Armagh defender. Gary Connaughton (Westmeath) Charlie Harrison (Sligo) Barry Owens (Fermanagh) Séan Marty Lockhart (Derry) Dónal Keogan (Meath) James Nallen (Mayo) Kevin Cassidy (Donegal) Dermot Earley (Roscommon) Gary Brennan (Clare) Johnny Doyle(Kildare) Michael Meehan (Galway) Benny Coulter (Down) Conor McManus (Monaghan) Mattie Forde (Wexford) Declan Browne (Tipperary) GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 5955 - 19/05/2020 21:39:48 2278744 Link 8 |
Are you havin a laugh. These selections are all a bit subjective but to say "Fenton has a bit to do" takes the bikkie for the silly billy comment of the week. 5 celtic crosses, 4 all-stars, 2018 player of the year, 35 championship games played, none lost, and M.O.M many times.

I would agree that Fenton still has a bit to do to definetly make such a hard team to make such as this and I would put Jack McCaffrey in the same boat. Both are outstanding footballers but are still only 26 27 so have a lot of their careers ahead of them. Plus the overall complete strength of the team aids them greatly although I know that could be said about a lot of players who could make the team but I think it is particularly true for Fenton and McCaffrey. Both definitely deserve to be in the mix for the team but saying Fenton has definitely done enough is wrong in my opinion.

Absolutely agree Matt Connor was superb probably the best forward I've seen

Excellent team Ollie, to be honest I'd forgotten about Joe Higgins at corner back, very good defender. Fairplay for picking from 15 different counties, not easy done but great team. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8583 - 20/05/2020 08:47:12 2278765 Link 8 |
All great players, in my haste I'd forgotten Ciaran McDonald, he was brilliant player, shame he hasn't got an AI medal but that's sport, I'd have him in for Glynn.

He won't lose sleep not being selected here. A class player, one people pay to go and see but the fact the Dubs are so far ahead of everyone and he's only had 5 seasons might be why people rate other more seasoned players above him. Sure Ryan Tubridy could play midfield for that team, it's that good, but Ryan was more of a wing back...

Cheers Htaem. I could not leave out a Meath player so I picked Donal Keoghan. He is some player.

Matt Connor was the greatest forward in the last 40 years, O'Dwyer said that he was the only player at the time of the great Kerry team that would get on his team, he was only 24 when his career was cut short, he had 3 all stars, he could have been chosed in any of the forward positions, so this team has no credibility, none of the 6 forwards on the chosen team would even lace his boots he was that good. naasmanxrhode (Offaly) - Posts: 39 - 20/05/2020 12:09:58 2278794 Link 3 |
I pay good money to see that. Ryan " the Cobra " Tubridy ha. You could fill two Croke Parks for that. Garth Brooks how are ya. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 1647 - 20/05/2020 13:29:33 2278798 Link 1 |

As I said before I've been attending All Ireland finals since 1972 and have only missed one since . Believe me when I say that Brian Fenton has nothing to do . What a magnificent footballer he is .

The 5 in a row run by the Dubs included a few cliff-hangers and Fenton was a key man in all of these bar possibly last years draw v Kerry where he failed to reach his own high standards amid rumours b4 the game that he wouldn't start due to illness.

I saw him in action when he was a young lad at a challenge game with ourselves and he didn't stand out a whole pile and wasn't that big either for his age. Looks like he sprouted a foot since. Ah , you couldn't argue with him being picked I suppose but it's a balls of a job picking a team like that anyway. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 1647 - 20/05/2020 19:01:46 2278842 Link 0 |
In fairness it was easier to play as a defender for Tyrone than Kerry back in that decade. Remember that Tyrone team were the first to really adopt tactics where forwards were dropped back to their own half of the pitch to crowd out the opposition attack.
