Ok I'm biased but Martin O Connell has to be on the team and I'd also have Trevor Giles there 2 time footballer of the year and not a mention from anyone a superb playmaker

You could get 100 people to pick a team for this and none might be the same, some selection to pick from in fairness

Can't argue with that. A team picked by public poll like this is always going to favour more recent players though. A lot of people voting may never have seen O'Connell or Giles playing

I hate that moving players around craic. I would have Keegan at 5 but If people wanted O Se that would be fair enough. Moving him to 6 is a joke like. Wouldn't have Connolly either.

Fair point. But they should have at least some knowledge, may I add a player not from my county but that those in the forwards wouldn't be fit to lace the boots of is Matt Connor. And I include all six of them, and I'd say they would probably agree themselves.

A man could be here all night discussing a team of the last 40 years so I'll be brief and keep it to two points . Lee Keegan at centre half back is ridiculous . He is a brilliant wing half back . He is not a centre half back . Any team of the last forty years that does not include Matt Connor at corner forward hasn't an ounce of credibility .

He wasn't picked at centre back RTÉ just put him there as he was 1 of the 3 half backs voted for. The poll asked to pick the best three half backs from a given list and he was chosen, 3 right or left half backs or 3 centre backs could have been selected. For me, James Nallen has been our best centre back since 1980, possibly best ever number 6.

What if you pick a team but you've never seen Matt Connor play?

Matt Connor wouldn't make my team but mainly because I never seen him play.

By all accounts he was amazing but I can't judge that for myself so I'm going to pick forwards that I can judge.

Fair point MesAmis and well made . I did see him play on several occasions. I saw my first All Ireland senior final in 1972. It was the hurling final . I've missed one hurling final (1975) and one football final (2000 replay) since then . Matt Connor was peerless . He scored 13-142 in 26 championship matches for Offaly . He scored 2-09 in the 1980 All Ireland semi final against the great Kerry team when he was 20 years old . He had two great feet and had tremendous power in both . YouTube the 1980 semi final and look at his two goals . He scored one with the right and the other with his lefty. Both were hit with serious power . Look at all he did, all he achieved and remember that he had kicked a ball for the last time just after he turned 24 . Younger people may not have seen him and that is understandable but older people have seen him and they will tell you that Matt Connor has to be on the team of the last forty years . Not to have him in that team robs the team of any shred of credibility .

What about Mick O Connell...Christy Ring in hurling? Posters can only go by what players they have seen play. I've heard Matt Connor was great but he played before I was born so I wouldn't be able pick him either.

Good team but sure it's only a bit of harmless nonsense.

Kerry have won an incredible 12 all-irelands in that period, Dublin are 2nd with 8, Meath are in 3rd with 4 all-irelands (but not a look in on the team) and Tyrone and Cork are tied 4th with 3 all-irelands each.

Also note that Cork have qualified for 9 all-irelands in that period and get no mention either, gas stuff.

Incredibly Mayo have lost 9 all-irelands in that period as well, which is very unlucky in fairness.

Finally Dublin are the only professional team to win an all-ireland in that period, decent achievement but to be expected against amateurs.

incredible that matt connor is not on this team . the greatest forward ever to play the game without equal so this team lacks credibility

It's a team of the last 40 years, neither Mick O'Connell or Christy Ring played in the last 40 years.

I agree but if the people who voted, I am going to assume if you voted on the backs you probably voted on the whole team, didn't see Matt Connor play they didn't see much of Paudi in his prime either.
