I'd prefer to see the GAA play a div 1 hurling league final or something similar in one of the weaker hurling counties to try and promote the game locally. Could do a lot for the game. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 979 - 05/05/2020 12:42:00 2277540 Link 2 |
Very true and it would qualify as a MAJOR change for the GAA.

Would be nice to see the league final awarded to county grounds some years the way the champions league is in soccer. Announce the venue 12 months before and give the ground and town a bit of time to organise a good show for the weekend

Off topic but it used to annoy me when I used to watch ESPN top plays of the week or whatever it was called. It was often a 7 foot man dunking a basketball unchallenged or a baseball player back pedalling to the boundary to make a 'miraculous' catch, unchallenged, with a glove bigger than his head, in a game that didn't count for anything both highly paid athletes. I chuckled and compared it to a hurling full back rising between two opponents intent on hitting him, catching the ball getting to ground and the roar of the crowd as he launched ball into his full forward line, swinging the game's momentum or an artist in the football half back line, threading a ball through the eye of the opposition defence, his teammate wins the ball, jinks in to the right back out to the left and swings it over from 45 yards and the crowd lifts as it leaves his boot and goes ballistic when it splits the posts. Sure we're definitely biased but no other games compare to Hurling and Gaelic Football. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 5955 - 05/05/2020 14:08:26 2277551 Link 8 |
Amen. ESPN was a brilliant concept but like a lot of things it got sour over time as far as I'm concerned. They'll show that slam dunk by the 7 Footer but not the great defensive play or steal or brilliant pass that lead to that 7 Footer getting the ball in the first place. That's why I believe you see a lot more selfish play in sports. They all want that highlight. GAA Abu.

There are some fantastic footballers in Europe and probably could produce 20 players to be competitive at division 4 level. But collective or cohesive training would be almost impossible. I think european county board tried to get a sevens team together a few years back. But Struggled.

It will never happen but it would be cool to see an expanded Railway cup with UK, Aus, USA and Europe. Nothing too serious just a festival of GAA like the Fenway cup but with proper rules.

That's if the GAA were actually serious is promoting hurling in weaker counties, instead of playing Mickey mouse bastardised games in the states.

Yeah. I hate when they destroy a product and pass it off as "Hurling". It was silly.

I don't think anyone I ever met or dealt with liked them Fenway rules. I wouldn't cross the street to see it. It's like old Rock and Roll bands that go on tour with 80% or more different band members from the original. Pure fake tripe. Sigh.

Who funds the Fenway thing. i always assumed it was sponsors and not the GAA and has no impact on GAAs promotion of hurling in Ireland But I agree the rules are tripe and I cant understand the need to change the rules as its not like Hurling is boring or too hard to understand with the normal rules Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1106 - 05/05/2020 21:17:33 2277591 Link 1 |
Probably funded by some local Boston Chapter of The Ancient Order of Hibernians or some group along that line.

They have the Global GAA Games which was held in Waterford last year. The problem is of course is that its a bit of everything because GAA politics comes into it. Its not a country based but rather more along the lines of county board based except then they also allow individual club teams in it as well - the keep every happy concept!

What about a live All Ireland on ESPN? Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 1082 - 06/05/2020 12:09:11 2277623 Link 0 |
What about playing the Railway cup semi finals on the Friday evening of All Ireland weekend in Parnell Park with the final as a curtain raiser for the final on the Sunday. Count the matches for All Stars. Obviously those in the final wouldn't be eligible and if Galway Hurlers are there then the Connaught Hurlers would be weak but imagine those hurlers from the west getting to play inter pro, what an honour for them and all those years playing in the Christy Ring, Lory Maker etc. Just a thought dufferman (Down) - Posts: 149 - 06/05/2020 13:28:54 2277630 Link 1 |
It's an interesting concept and no more far fetched than some of the other suggestions. Funny how Hurling didn't take off in some parts of the country like it did in others.

What if the winner of the Annual Tidy Towns competition got the League Final in their Grounds as an extra incentive to a cleaner town? Everyone wins.

The Fenway event was a poor substitute for proper hurling but it really allowed the goalkeepers to showcase their talents. The problem with hurling events in other countries is the size of the pitch. An American football pitch is 109m x 53m. Croke park is 145m x 88m. Rugby pitches are generally larger than American football but still not nearly as wide as GAA pitches. Another rule set or smaller squads is unfortunately necessary in the US and many other countries. softpretzel7 (USA) - Posts: 1 - 07/05/2020 19:00:51 2277719 Link 1 |
I'd say most agree with most of your points but just remember that the originating countries of many sports are not necessarily the best at them once the rest of the world gets involved. Soccer for example started in England but they're not the best anymore. Golf started in Scotland but they're not the best anymore, etc. The same could possibly go with GAA sports if it ever happened but as you said it would be far fetched.
