Just heard on today fm news. Obviously wont be a name released. Discuss. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 1636 - 26/04/2020 19:05:21 2276792 Link 0 |
Firstly, the unnamed player, who is in his 30's, failed the test following an Allianz League game in February, is appealing the outcome of the test. So, maybe we should all wait until the appeal has been heard; he has a right to due process. But, it would be a sad state of affairs if amatuer players feel the need to take drugs to improve performance. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 1115 - 26/04/2020 19:34:47 2276793 Link 0 |
Just to correct my previous comment. The drug could have been a recreational drug, rather than performance enhancing.

Amateur or professional is irrelevant. Reasons to do so are the same. ie it's a player doing it to get better/stronger/faster/more likely to win

No. For professionals sport is their means of making a living; many choose to take performance enhancing drugs to make money. This is what Larry Olubamiwo, a former heavyweight boxer who was banned for four years in 2012 after using drugs, had to say last week: "As a society we use drugs to enhance ourselves. We wake up and drink a cup of coffee that has caffeine in it. That's a drug. People drink alcohol to numb pain or relax. That's a drug. Nicotine is a drug. What is the difference between someone using these drugs and an athlete using other drugs to improve themselves? Many athletes dope to make money for themselves and their family. My first goal as a boxer was always to make a living." Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 1115 - 26/04/2020 20:53:14 2276801 Link 2 |
That's nonsense. It still boils down to better results means better outcomes That's exactly the same If its amatuer or professional sport. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 1636 - 26/04/2020 23:24:55 2276808 Link 0 |
That boxer must be joking. There's a big difference between someone drinking a cup of coffee (Legal Product) and some boxer cheating. Big difference and it shouldn't have to be explained.

Not the first intercounty footballer either. We had failed tests in Kerry and Monaghan in recent years. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 875 - 27/04/2020 09:11:16 2276817 Link 2 |
Anyone that uses gyms regularly will be under no illusions that taking PED's is very common place. It is not needles and stuff like that but huge amounts of supplements. Maybe they are just less discreet but the teenagers seem to be using it most. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1292 - 27/04/2020 10:50:12 2276823 Link 3 |

There are claims in both cycling and rugby that there is PED use at amateur level even sometimes school level in rugby. The documentary Icarus does a good job of showing the big and quick effects of PEDs on an amateur athlete Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1106 - 27/04/2020 13:54:06 2276835 Link 0 |
I see everyone is already assuming it's a PED. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 6893 - 27/04/2020 14:42:58 2276842 Link 10 |
It's all speculation so far 'It is believed the player is launching an appeal after testing positive for a banned substance that breaches Sport Ireland's anti-doping regulations, which apply to inter-county footballers and hurlers in GAA'. Also speculation that he, or she, will appeal the decision. Could be asthma medicine after being 'recently' diagnosed with the ailment. A good story for rumour mills when there's no sport. Athletes rarely accidentally take excessive doses of laxatives or something that will make them sick and hinder their performance. I don't believe any of them who try to justify or explain away taking substances on their banned list. It's the athlete's responsibility to know what they're taking and if they don't know then DON'T TAKE IT! GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 5955 - 27/04/2020 19:19:34 2276866 Link 7 |
There's been some absolutely hilarious excuses over the years from tainted meat to absorbing testosterone from a conjoined fetus Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1106 - 27/04/2020 21:40:32 2276872 Link 2 |
I am totally against people taking drugs to improve performance (or for many other reasons). Now what is legal and ill-legal can be not well defined and legal is about law, not always about what is correct, the recent law on travel highlights my point. People and posters should be careful about making accusations when facts are not known. Just because something is in print does not make it fact, or indeed accurate. I have no idea what county the person is from and that does not matter, however I do know that most of what we read in the print media tends to be skewed.

Fair point. plenty of coke doing the rounds although i believe that leaves the system quickly enough where as cannabis can hang around for a while making it easier to get caught.

Cocaine has never been more popular and it's easier and cheaper to get now than it was in Celtic Tiger Dublin which is frightening. I saw it in Dublin, now it's everywhere in rural Ireland. Crazy.
