Murphy has made mistakes too. He let in a soft goal from Johnny Glynn in the 2018 Leinster Final replay, which any good keeper would expect to save. All goalies make mistakes. He's an excellent one for sure.

I think it is hard to pick most forwards in one position because over their careers they move around a lot. However backs are different. If I were to pick the best 6 backs in the positions they played my picks would be Fitzhenry Canning Delaney Tyrell Whelehan McMahon/McGrath would give it to Seanie just because he won a couple of All Irelands no problem either way though Maher gatha (Kilkenny) - Posts: 183 - 19/05/2020 13:51:47 2278695 Link 0 |

6 from Tipp don't know how Kilkenny were able to beat them at all. gatha (Kilkenny) - Posts: 183 - 21/05/2020 21:22:08 2278943 Link 2 |
No Ollie Canning, JJ Delaney, TJ Reid or Ken McGrath more holes on this team than you'd find in Augusta

Maybe Tipp did KK by more than ten points in each of three finals this decade. No big of Tipp-what LK man is- but just saying

Well it is not a team of the last 10 years so don't see your point but, even in the last 10 years The Cats have 4 All Irelands the most in hurling. Tipp have 3. Since 79, when this team is picked from, it is 11 to 6. Any team without JJ, TJ and Ollie Canning since 79 is not a reflection of the brilliance of those players. One last thing JJ played on Kelley and Callinan and won 3 only lost 1 final against Tipp not to mention league finals and All Ireland Championship matches. Anyway it is good fun to talk about the great players in these trying times. Past away a bit of time. Stay Healthy

Its also not a team of all Ireland medal winners but a team of individuals. JJ rarely played on Eoin Kelly ( who i assume you mean). He done a reasonable job on Callanan in 2014 but conceded 0-5 from play in the drawn game and 2-0 in the replay. However, I would have found a place for him having said that. With the exception of Cummins I can't seea huge argument against the rest of the Tipp players. Jackie Tyrell even recently picked Eoin Kelly ahead of Shefflin, Reid, DJ (?) and Eddie Brennan as the best forward he ever played with (as he did in Kierans) and that's some statement. From a Tipp perspective I think Noel Mcgrath is unfortunate to miss out. He has only failed to score from play in one game (in 50 odd) cship games which no one can compare to. John Troy is also the most skilful player I've seen. Not everyone can get in though but for me (and at the risk of contradicting myself) Mullane probably deserves to be in there. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 2911 - 22/05/2020 23:12:57 2279024 Link 1 |
Thanks for the reply. I overlooked the thirty year span, but in fairness Tipp did overhaul KK in four finals in that period and that is a record against the Cats in that period no other county comes near. Of course that is not to say the KK team, of the oughties especially, were not the greatest team ever

In the Sunday Game era (from 1979), pretty sure that KK have won 16 senior All Irelands. Toc (Kildare) - Posts: 3 - 23/05/2020 17:18:21 2279072 Link 1 |
No Tommy Walsh?

Tommy and Sid played the same position in my opinion Sid was better. I would say he is the best wing back I ever saw.

John mullanes championship record is 3.8 scores per gamefrom play. Henry sheflin is 2.9, Eddy Berennan,2.9. If a forward job is scoring from, Mullane has to be on any team. Shefflin and Brennans would have top up their average scores by quit a lot by playing in a dire Leinster championship! Its easier to score against Laois,Carlow,Westmeath, etc than against Cork, Tipp or Clare.

Brian Corcoran missing in mid to late 90's? And you are allowed to post??? Corcoran gave a man of the match performance, when he led JBM's babes in their win over Kilkenny in All Ireland final, when he dominated the game from center back. He was an ever present on the Cork team in the 90's. I would rate Brian and Tipperary's Mick Roche as the best center half backs I have ever seen!

Nobody has mentioned Dan the Man! Dan gave some exceptional displays around 2004. Admittedly his longevity was questionable, but he could be included at half or full forward. My team of last 30 years is. Cusack, Corcoran, Delaney, Tyrrell, Walsh, Maher,Whelehan, Brendan Maher, Fennelly, Reid, Shefflin,Kelly, Horgan, Shanahan, Lar Corbett. Subs; Brennan; Jamsie O Connor, Sean Og O Hailpin, Ciaran Carey, Eoin Larkin Rockies (Cork) - Posts: 535 - 24/05/2020 20:09:43 2279143 Link 0 |

Forgot DJ Carey: Joe Deane, Anthony Daly, Ronan Curran, Brian Hogan. Almost impossible to pick a team. Rockies (Cork) - Posts: 535 - 24/05/2020 21:36:17 2279147 Link 0 |
No DJ in both your teams?

He could be slotted in instead of Eddie Brennan in 2nd team. DJ had 2 poor All Ireland finals 2003 and 2004 when Wayne Sherlock marked him. Wayne had much more difficulty with John Mullane. We are fortunate to have witnessed such talent from amateurs. As manager, Brian Cody wins easily as best in 40 years.
