the gaa needs to forget about intercounty and if [big it] the games are allowed in the coming few months , just leave it to the clubs [ the needs to forget about money for once] Stmunnsriver (Wexford) - Posts: 1925 - 08/04/2020 14:31:21 2275542 Link 1 |
the games are allowed in the coming few months , just leave it to the clubs [ the needs to forget about money for once]"]That's a very simplistic way of putting it. Quite simply the GAA financial model absolutely depends on the All Ireland county championships going ahead each year. If it doesn't go ahead, then the financial repercussions will be felt at all levels of the GAA, and not just at HQ.

the games are allowed in the coming few months , just leave it to the clubs [ the needs to forget about money for once]"]It won't happen as they'll make more money from the intercounty games than the club games. A lot of clubs will be feeling the pinch what with loans for this and that and no chance of fundraising. KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 11732 - 08/04/2020 16:34:04 2275549 Link 2 |
Clubs should take priority but won't. I hope we can't have an inter county championship but the longer this goes on the less likely it will happen. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 10339 - 08/04/2020 17:17:53 2275552 Link 6 |
George Lee said on the 6 o clock news the restrictions are likely to be in place for months. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2216 - 08/04/2020 20:34:29 2275559 Link 0 |

Nobody can say that for sure...others countries are slowly relaxing measures. You cant keep a country locked down for a year with close to a million on social welfare...the economy would collapse....

Not in tipp or fair few other counties They'll start in April usually with 1 championship game but some years will see2 early on if not more. Waiting until end of summer for clubs to start their main competition is idiotif KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 1636 - 09/04/2020 00:38:13 2275580 Link 0 |
"]That's a very simplistic way of putting it. Quite simply the GAA financial model absolutely depends on the All Ireland county championships going ahead each year. If it doesn't go ahead, then the financial repercussions will be felt at all levels of the GAA, and not just at HQ."]Now in saying the above, the health of the country is paramount. I'm sure the GAA will be taking their lead from the advice and direction of the government. The GAA should be planning for a severe financial hit in 2020. Or, to be more blunt about it, should have had a rainy day fund in existence all along. Not for something as drastic as a pandemic, no-one could have foreseen the current emergency. But certainly an emergency savings fund of some description. The government will have an awful hard decision to make in the near future. At what point do the social welfare payments become unsustainable for example? How long do we keep the country in lockdown as it is? If people are only going to get €200 a week how long will it be before there is a mutiny? There is talk of home testing kits being made available and those who can prove they've had the virus and recovered will be allowed to get back to some sort of normality in terms of work and getting out and about. But at the moment that seems a long way off. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 7075 - 09/04/2020 09:31:27 2275587 Link 0 |

Neither club or county can exist without the other. Counties need clubs for players and clubs need counties for the money and exposure. Rugby and soccer would have taken over years ago like in every other country if it wasn't for the All Ireland. Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1106 - 09/04/2020 19:31:20 2275640 Link 0 |
You're right, country cant be kept on lockdown for a year but sport ,and particularly amateur sport will be the last area where restrictions are relaxed. Hence why it is highly unlikely there will be any GAA this year.

We're all just guessing and speculating lads, getting the situation under control is all that matters however long or short it takes wexico15 (Wexford) - Posts: 2602 - 09/04/2020 21:13:17 2275658 Link 0 |
I've been saying the same but the clubs will be an after thought in any plans - should games go ahead. Thar's the unfortunate reality of it. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 2911 - 10/04/2020 01:35:06 2275669 Link 0 |
Lives come first always but if the economy collapses then the healthcare system is in further trouble...that's my point. It's a delicate balancing act.
