Replying To Gleebo:  "Superman wears Paddy Keenan pyjamas!

Was re-reading The Road To 51 the other day and saw that Louth's All-Ireland winning side of 1957 had two Mayo men on it, Dan O' Neill and Seamus O'Donnell. They remain the most recent winners of Sam from the Yew County.

O' Neill was a garda stationed in Drogheda who declared for the Wee County after the Mayo County Board queried his expense claims. Seems like shooting ourselves in the foot is a cross-generational trait...

Both men scored a point each in the final which proved to be the difference as Louth won the match by two points.

Ollie, What was the score between Louth v Wexford in the Leinster quarter-final that year?

To be fair, every county has a right to query expense claims. Now, I know nothing about the O'Neill case (do you?), but maybe they had a good reason to query. By the way, as you probably know, Dan O'Neill returned to Mayo in 1963 and played his final county game for the team."
Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. I am aware of some of the background of the O' Neill situation through contemporaries of his.

What is a matter of public record is that O'Neill wasn't happy with the queries and that the Mayo panel of that era (which is still our most successful) took a very dim view of the County Board at that time, particularly with regard to how they treated players.

For instance, several of them were upset by the fact that the County Board didn't organize a medal presentation following the 1951 All-Ireland victory, preferring to send out the medals by post.

There are a lot of corroborated stories about players having to make their own route to games, if they were based outside of the county, and of course there was the famous letter sent by Seán Flanagan, Liam Hastings, Padraig Carney etc. in 1948 warning that if the County Board didn't get its act together, that football in Mayo would regress irreversibly.

So, while it may be impossible to prove (and maybe not even desirable to do so, given that most of the people involved have passed away since), I know who I and a lot of other people believe, given the balance of probabilities.

They lost but beat Offaly in '45. Louth had a serious team in those years (from '43 to '60) and especially their battles with Meath were the stuff of legends.

Between 1947 and 1954 the Leinster Championship was won by either Louth or Meath. In this period they played each other 11 times which included two Leinster finals, a match that went to a replay and another match that needed two replays. The winning team only won by a point in these tense and thrilling affairs.
