Replying To Bon:  "Was that shown on TV last night? I think he was always held in a high regard as a player, he won an all star if I'm not mistaken? Played for Dublin later in his career too"
No it wasn't on TV at all I was just watching highlights on YouTube, I remember Barr going to dublin as well, I'd say that time dublin were down the lower divisions so it would be hard to rate him.

Replying To Gaillimh_Abu:  "Barr had a great season in 1989 but he never really produced the goods on a consistent basis in subsequent years. That Antrim team had some very stylish hurlers: Paul McKillen was one of the top midfielders of that era and regularly popped over a few long range points. Sambo McNaughton was a brilliant wing back. Their 1991 semi-final with Kilkenny was an epic and they were desperately unlucky to lose by 2-18 to 1-19. After that they went into a steady decline."
Antrim had a good 3-4 year spell with that team so Gaillimh, Tipp gave gave them a bit of a beating in the final that year although the Antrim boys took skelps out of them if Im remembering properly, Pat fox and Nicky English got a few whacks from Nial Patterson, Jay's he was some size of a man.

He caused a major split in St Vincents when he transferred, i remember talking to some old vinnies stalwarts at the time and they were disgusted, never shone even at club level after that.

1985 semi-final, the first game between Kerry and Monaghan- cracking game from what i recall. The replay was more one sided to a degree. But drawn game was score for score

Jayz, I believe I was at that one as well ! If memory serves me right the Bomber stood under his own crossbar in the vain hope of preventing a late late Monaghan equaliser from a 50.
I do remember Monaghan brought massive support

The first game was a cracking game, Monaghan were a tidy side back then and put it up to a lot of teams. Kerry were lucky and just took the lead with time up with a cracking long range free from Mikey Sheehy, Monaghan won a free with time long gone about 70 yards out, the feeling was it was too far but the Monaghan forward stitched it, it was a cracking score worthy of the occasion.

The second game had two sendings off but was a good game also.

I think that was Nudie Hughes that kicked that score! Massive kick under pressure!

Yes it was McEneany. I recall an interview I heard were when he was lining up to it the ref said last kick and ironically Ambrose O'Donovan turned or Tommy Doyle and said we have it here boy - Ambrose said the look on Doyle's face when it cleared the black spot was just wow, Rosie said that one just had to sit back and admire it as a wonderful strike under pressure , a class free kick

Replying To essmac:  "I'd love to be able to see games from the 50s with modern filming quality; eg when Tyrone won their first Ulster title in 56. Another fantastic game was Galway v Tyrone in the league start of 04. Nothing much hanging on the game but it was one of those games where both teams just decided to go for it. Galway won AET; P Joyce and S Cavanagh both immense. Tyrone v Armagh 05 was a great game; extremely close and a good balance between quality defending and quality attacking. Some games that have passed into folklore are, when viewed objectively, characterised by some woeful defending."
You might get lucky with some highlights up on YouTube, there are definitely old black and white Pathé reels of All-Ireland finals, Mayo's wins in 1950 and 51 are up there anyway, fairly sure the Polo Grounds final in 1947 too.

What's today's match on TG4 at 3.25..? I'd like to see Kerry v Roscommon drawn National League Final 1974 or Armagh v Roscommon All-Ireland semi final 1980 when we got to the final on our fourth attempt having lost All Ireland semi finals in 1977( by 1 point in a replay),1978, and 1979( by 1 point).

1990 Munster hurling final, Mark Foleys amazing scoring.

It would be great if they showed the 4
Meath Dublin 1991 games on consecutive nights

Munster final 2004 - Ger Canning "tony browne..great player, now coming towards the end of his career"
A 30/31 year old at the time who didn't retire until 2014 after. Unreal stuff.

The 1992 league final between Limerick and Tipp.
It was the first time I ever saw Limerick win anything.
10 pts down at halftime we fought back to win by 1.
kick-started a relatively successfull era where we won 2 Munster titles in the nineties and were desperately unlucky not to win an All Ireland...

There doing a a series of 'My favourite game' in the English newspaper The Guardian, where various journalists write about their favourite sports game. It covers all different sports. Today, Barry Glendenning (a native of Birr), the deputy sports editor has chosen the Offaly v Limerick, 1994 All-Ireland Hurling final.
