If playing with words makes you happy and softens the disappointment of your own county's failure to complete the 5 in a row then im ok with that, thank God for the panel of footballers that completed that feat for my county, its because of them I'll never know what that feels like, my sincere sympathies to you it obviously still hurts badly 38 years later!

That's right Cork took em in the final, how often do you see that happen where a team have a brilliant semifinal and stagnate in the final. Jack O'Connor always reckoned he'd rather win a dour miserable semifinal as it would be easier for him to bring the lads back down to earth. Just watched Limerick v Galway 1980 final , great coverage . Wish I could direct ALL my TV license monies to TnaG only as opposed to RTE fat cats . OpenStand (Limerick) - Posts: 293 - 29/03/2020 15:51:13 2274968 Link 2 |
Its very interesting watching the matches on youtube,Derry vs down 1994 that cork vs waterford match in 2004 was just epic (it's up already). Meath vs down just up. The red and black flags on the hill that day was amazing. Ulsterchamps_32 (Donegal) - Posts: 336 - 29/03/2020 17:32:43 2274975 Link 1 |
I was lucky enough to be there that day. Watching it back now it's interesting how the significance of Conor Hayes' interception of Eamon Cregan's handpass intended for Big Joe barely registers on TV. I still wake up in a cold sweat over that one.

Watched that game last night. Boy were Donegal good, excellent in defence and their counter attacking play was of the very highest order. Cork were a good team but in the second half Donegal made them look very ordinary. Nice to also see a youthful Michael Murphy and Paddy Mcbearty out there alongside some Donegal legends. Good choice. Kikenny and Limerick dominated hurling in the mid 1930's. Also, three players in the 1936 final were selected for the Hurling Team of the Millennium. Mick Mackey of Limerick. Lory Meagher and Paddy Phelan of Kilkenny http://www.limerickcity.ie/media/1936%20gaa%20annual.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl_DJpK-WzY Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 1115 - 30/03/2020 22:40:51 2275061 Link 0 |

A question for the hurling folk on here, where would Ciarán Barr from Antrim rate amongst the hurlers of that era? KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 11732 - 31/03/2020 16:52:22 2275110 Link 1 |
Was that shown on TV last night? I think he was always held in a high regard as a player, he won an all star if I'm not mistaken? Played for Dublin later in his career too

Barr had a great season in 1989 but he never really produced the goods on a consistent basis in subsequent years. That Antrim team had some very stylish hurlers: Paul McKillen was one of the top midfielders of that era and regularly popped over a few long range points. Sambo McNaughton was a brilliant wing back. Their 1991 semi-final with Kilkenny was an epic and they were desperately unlucky to lose by 2-18 to 1-19. After that they went into a steady decline.
