1990 All Ireland Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

First final I attended. I still see the blood and bandages onslaught on us in the 2nd half. Most of our terrace support was in the old canal end with the hill primarily Cork. All I could see was a flood of goals from a distance. In 1993 was on the hill when the Cats took us. That is why 1998 was so special when our footballers won in style as had not experienced victory on final day until then in terms of being at the match. Relief but Cork hurling always had a certain aura in my eyes.

Hopper McGrath who played that day said this week in an interview that he has never watched that game back . It was a very hard one for Galway to take . Whilst they missed chances they were also on the receiving of some terrible decisions which made a difference . The refs decision to pull Eanna Ryan back In the first half when Ryan was clean through on goal with only Ger Cunningham to beat and award a free instead was a shocking decision . Martin Naughton let fly with a bullet in the second half . Ger Cunningham saved it yet the umpire awarded a wide instead of a seventy. Finally John Fitzgibbon ran seriously over carried the ball when scoring a vital goal for Cork . It was a great win for Cork but they got a lot of breaks that day.

He also penalised Michael Coleman (wrongly) for overcarrying at a crucial stage in the first half when a score looked on and then ignored a blatant push on Pete Finnerty over the sideline just before half time. To rub salt in the wounds Cork pointed the line ball to give them a lift going down the tunnel. A lot of decisions went Corks way that day particularly in the first half I suppose if the truth be told its still killing me nearly thirty years on.

Frank Murphy must had a word on referee ear in at half time. Freak result.
