that was a terrible game for Galway to lose.only saw 2nd half but cork got every ball that bounced. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3841 - 22/03/2020 21:09:29 2274326 Link 2 |
In fairness, no team is going to loose an All Ireland final in the last 7 minutes with such a commanding lead...no wait...

Martin Naughton's miss was a big turning point. Should have been a goal but bounced of Cunninghams face and no 65 awarded. Cork won the puck out and scored a point. That's a 4 point turn a round at a crucial stage of the game. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1292 - 23/03/2020 10:14:59 2274345 Link 1 |
from memory, did Kevin Hennessy score a goal inside the first minute (if not minutes of that game) Galway had a poor start from what i remember of it.. Fairplayalways (Offaly) - Posts: 387 - 23/03/2020 12:09:39 2274363 Link 1 |
Yeah Galway have had a lot of "could have won" and "should have won" finals over the years. It would fill a library. Sigh. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 1082 - 26/03/2020 12:21:51 2274723 Link 0 |
Trump, but other counties have had similar experiences. My own county county point to,'44,'45, '49' '56 '66' 71, '83 '84 '94 '96' 01 '14 and last year as years we might have won but did not. I am sure other counties, to a lesser or greater extent, have the same story

I agree with you. I couldn't begrudge your well deserved victory over the Galway Hurlers 2 years ago. It still hurt though.

Clicked on this expecting to see discussion on Meath Cork football final, a game many in Meath still believe we left behind us. It was wired back then, Meath in football and Galway in hurling seemed to shadow each other (both won 2 in a row in 87 & 88 and neither went on to achieve the 3 in a row or reach the final in 89 and then both lost to Cork in 90). bdbuddah (Meath) - Posts: 768 - 04/04/2020 12:17:50 2275311 Link 1 |
Yea Trump, like last year for both of us its the close ones that kill you. If you are well beaten you just say 'lets get back on the horse, we were not good enough today anyway' and look forward to next year.

1990 All Ireland Final Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 1115 - 04/04/2020 14:18:43 2275317 Link 0 |
I think that game is on Eir Sport over the weekend, good to see Limerick people can laugh about it now. Oldtourman, I was not born in 1996 but my father has always said that he wished Wexford beat any other team in the country other than that Limerick team. I suppose, I am only a victim of less than 10 years of Wexford hurling, most of which has been on some sort of upward trajectory. He on the other hand has witnessed decades of heartbreak. He has always maintained the Wexford team in 93 were better than the team that won the All-Ireland but Kilkenny, well bloody Kilkenny, they were like an abusive relationship to Wexford for too long. Got my hurling and football mixed up. But my main point stands. By the way. in 1990, Cork's Teddy McCarthy became the first player in the history of the GAA to win All-Ireland medals in both codes in the same season. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 1115 - 04/04/2020 15:12:16 2275321 Link 0 |
I remember spending most of the game trying to work out where the ball was going to drop every time it was lofted high in the air. The old Croke Park had those extremely frustrating blind spots what with large concrete pillars and the upper decks helping to obscure the view of those of us buried way back in the lower deck Maroonatic (Galway) - Posts: 947 - 04/04/2020 18:03:04 2275330 Link 0 |
Pity the poor umpires at the Hill 16 end struggling to see the dropping sliotar coming towards them and the sun blazing in to their eyes. And the sliotars white to compound their difficulties. Hopefully, white sliotars will become extinct. ballagoballa (UK) - Posts: 40 - 04/04/2020 19:10:23 2275338 Link 0 |
And probably the only player who will ever do it too. We are unlikely to ever see a dual player play both codes at elite county level again.

Still the same in the back 10-15 rows of the lower deck as was there for the Leinster Final last year.
