Replying To Furlong1949:  "Absolute disaster has been county finals in gaa.

1 A club in Armagh won county final, 31 out of 33 of the panel had covid afterwards and 100 people in surrounding village also.
2 Moycullen in Galway won first ever senior county title. Afterwards massive outbreak in panel which has spilled over into local area
3 Ballivor and Rataoth won county titles in Meath. Afterward many players tested positive and both Ballivor and Rataoth have huge numbers of cases in the town.
4 Outbreaks in Cavan and Wexford and kildare have also being linked to county finals
One of the things that happened was players filled the cup up with drink and all drank from the same cup afterwards and then preceded to visit all the local pubs and many local houses in the parish. GAA response to this, we should have took the cup off the winning team after the ceremony, just after the match.
I also know today of a kildare town, where the local GAA club were in the couty final recently. And 10 players were tested with the virus afterwards. And their teenage sisters and brothers have been also being effected from close contact with these players and so now the virus has spread to local secondary chool. Talking to one teacher today she says 4 students in her class have the virus all got from close contact with 10 gaa players who picked it up after county final. There is many many more examples across country we are not hearing of.
Then you had
4 The scenes in Blackrock Cork after the County final.win when the team and supporters marched through the town with the cup like a st patricks day parade. No social distancing at matchs as crowds all atop of each other and more then 200 people at county finals.
5 An ex county player resigned from management of Offaly club team as he was not happy with issues over a case
6 In Waterford hurling final, player was waiting for test yet he was allowed to play in final. His later test proved he had the virus.
7 A minor player was waiting on a test he was allowed to travel on packed bus with rest of panel to county final he was tested positive
8 Donegal, Fermanagh and Armagh have had to cancel matchs and training as players in all 3 counties have got the virus. Fermamagh are playing Clare at weekend and so many Fermanagh players have the virus they might not
be able to field a team.
9 6 Wexford GAA players have been tested positive for the virus in the last few days.

There are some of the known cases whats happenned in GAA, its pretty certain there is many more cases like the above not being reported in GAA. We have seen with the soccer team how quickly with sportspeople how they can get afftected. Yet in the next 2 weeks 32 counties in the island will engage in a national competition, (basically amateur players many of them frontline workers )will be on packed buses and criss cross the country and criss crossing the border, which happens to be one of the areas with the worst effected cases in Europe. Yet starting at the weekend, this is only starting. It reminds me of what a once great gaa president from Mayo who was also a doctor said when he talked about the scourge of drink on Irish society. He wrote a book called "No one shouted stop". I think that title of that book is apt now, No one shouted stop.

What the hell are the GAA at, an amateur organistion having a national competition in two jurisdictions, one of which has highest number of cases in Europe, what are they at, having an All Ireland championship as a world wide pandemic is its second wave as cases explode across the island. You couldnt think of a worst 2 months then November and December to have the championship as the second waves peaks. Will anyone in the GAA hierachy shout stop? It really looks like an amateur association acting like amateurs. In March the GAA did excellent work now they will have PR disaster on there hands at the very least, just because in the words of great late Eugene McGee who once said every decision the GAA makes goes back to money. You take the Sky deal, the super 8s and now the championship going ahead. Its all to do with money, games played means the GAA will get money from broadcasters. Its totally against what GAA should stand for. Just when the GAA should be showing example and leadership to young people, to everyone they are doing the opposite and if anything are super spreaders in terms of cases currently. I can see the championship starting but there is not a hope in hell , zero chance of it finishing. Other organisation like hockey and basketball have stopped all adult competitons on the island. But the issues, the growing rate of numbers will increase and the GAA will have played an helping hand in that. It really is crazy when you sit down and think of it. Call of the All Ireland championship and play them when it is safe to do so. Its very simple. But where is the leadership in the GAA. No where to be seen."
I think the Fermanagh situation will definitely influence other counties and holding their hands up regarding positive cases in their squad, unfortunately....

With this season so short and compact, the pressure on players to "play on regardless" will be huge.
Not correct, but it will happen..!

Great post Furlong.

The GAA community of which we are all members should be ashamed of themselves. If I see some nonsense posts from certain GAA clubs putting up fb posts during imminent lockdown about charity this or buying groceries for cocooned Rosie and Jim I'll let them have it.

Welcome back Furlong, agree with general tone of post, Meath one of the counties who failed to enforce limit on numbers attending County Final and our numbers are now rising at alarming rate, right up there with two of border counties put on Stage 4. Have been watching TG4 Monday night coverage of Finals from across the Island and it seem we were not alone. As you say the GAA should act now, because it is very lightly decision will be taken out of their hands tomorrow. As least one former GAA President agree with your views.

Too many people are only fearful of dying from COVID 19. They don't see the threat if they don't have symptoms but could inadvertently be asymptomatic and spread it to at risk elderly people or anyone with underlying conditions. They can't see the possible dangers of getting COVID19, seemingly recovering from it but developing medical conditions later such as respitarory problems.

If they can put pictures of infected lungs on cigarette boxes to scare people of the dangers of smoking or if they can do mockups of horrific road accidents for TV to warn people about dangerous driving then they should consider an ad campaign, graphic if it needs to be, to absolutely scare the shi+e out of people into being more responsible. Show them what the long term health affects could be. Most people are very responsible and use their cop on. But it's the minority that are being reckless and spreading COVID19 and the consequences are lock down for the majority. The lock down is only a speedvan, people will be responsible while they are being watched but will speed away with being lax on COVID once lock down ends. It's time they take it more seriously and let us all try to get back to some sort of normality. Long past time.

Are you joking? As you know from my posts, i prefer the no soccer at all version. As regards the soccer over the water, it's worse, they think they are somebody. Great to see soccer clubs going to the wall though during this lockdown.

Thanks for the comments fellow county men Royaldunne, Crinigan, seadog54.

Here are more comments from Doctor in leinster

Virgin news reporter posted this early today

https://twitter.com/newschambers/sta...47308123516928

Basically doctor in leinster says there are clusters all around leinster because of the GAA. There is a 18 person cluster from gaa county final this week. And the doctor says there is large many clusters in one leinster county due to gaa matchs. The doctor says after the matchs players celebrated from drinking from the cup passing around the cup and taking shots from the cup. Another outbreak was related to with lockin with gaa players celebrating county final win.
Now Imagine if Mayo won Sam or Cavan won Ulster or Wexford or Waterford won the hurling the celebration we saw after the county finals would be tame in comparsion.

The Minister for Justice Helen McEntee was in the middle of that crowd in the stand at the Meath final. now she's out today saying how we must all behave ourselves in order for the GAA games to proceed, she was happy enough herself to join in for the Meath final,
I think a lot of what happened was after golfgate, I think the people seen the likes of the surpreme court judge and gov minister,EU commisioner etc flouting the rules they set and expect the 'ordinary' joedopes to follow.
I think some people said to hell with them after that,
of course the nonsense of schools staying open no matter what the lockdown level is also losing the peoples support imo, they can't visit each others houses but a few hundred of them can mix in the same rooms and buses everyday? can't see the logic in that at all.
anyway hope we get the league finished at least, suppose if they go to level 5 they will call off the Championship, dis-aster.

Nothing to play for like a lot of counties to be fair. But it's a weak meath team with a poor manager who blames the ref for everything no matter what the scoreline.

Concerns raised as Covid cases soar in Forkhill with First Communion cancelled by Micheal McKenna October 2, 2020

Concerns have been raised following the dramatic rise in Covid-19 cases in a south Armagh village over the last number of days. A coronavirus outbreak has come just days after Forkhill claimed an historic Junior Championship title - their first in 39 years.

Earlier this week Peadar Ó Doirnín GAA Club released a statement confirming the there had been a number of positive cases within the club "particularly among our senior team".

In an update on Friday morning, the club, said: "The virus has unfortunately spread beyond our players to include some committee members and others in the locality.

"We appreciate the devastating impact this has on everyone.

"The only way we will get through this is by supporting one another and abiding by all PHA guidance. We appeal to everyone to follow these guidelines.

We wish all those with the virus a return to full health. Please look after yourself and each other."

I think a lot of what happened was after golfgate, I think the people seen the likes of the surpreme court judge and gov minister,EU commisioner etc flouting the rules they set and expect the 'ordinary' joedopes to follow.
I think some people said to hell with them after that,
of course the nonsense of schools staying open no matter what the lockdown level is also losing the peoples support imo, they can't visit each others houses but a few hundred of them can mix in the same rooms and buses everyday? can't see the logic in that at all.
anyway hope we get the league finished at least, suppose if they go to level 5 they will call off the Championship, dis-aster."
Exactly - leading by example or what.???
Politicians seem to think they are exempt from the rules and then have the nerve to preach to the nation.
McEntee at the county final and Golf Gate perfect examples...!

"Do as I SAY, not as I DO". People need to read Orwell's 1984 again. Sigh.

I have to agree with you that co-operation of the public is/will wane more because of the way too many leaders and high profile people are openly displaying disregard for the safety recommendation and rules. It is as if these inconveniences are just for joe soap and they are above this. That is sad because lives are at stake and my theory on rulers is the more people frightened into complying will compensate for those who do not. It is and always was a numbers game. If you allow one social gathering or schools and off set it by stopping others the multiplier changes. Sorry to call it game because it is any thing but a game. However inconsistencies is going to cause apathy and kill many more of us.

It is all hearsay if you ask me. There are no links to any of his accusations. I suspect this tirade has more to do with Meath GAA being relegated than any so called concern for Covid 19. Having said all that, if it is not feasible to play championship in November and December, so be it. Roll on Summer 2021!

I am afraid the clock is ticking for GAA intercounty championship. With the way things are going there will be some backlash if people are locked into homes and out of their jobs for 6 weeks, while a privaleged few can put on a county jersey and go were they like. Situation is way way too serious for this kind of nonsense. The problem right across this country is a total lack of leadership.

Replying To updwell:  "Looks like the Meath lads don't want the championship to go ahead"
I think that is very very very unfair, I think there is many more people other then Meath contributers here that want the GAA to deal with this . In latest survey 61% of Irish people want stricker restrictions, are not happy with current restrictions they are not strick enough. Looking from this forum and across GAA community thousands and many more of GAA people across the 32 counties have issues of whats going on. Even 1 in 4 players dont want the championship to go ahead if you look at GPA latest survey. People like Dr Niall Moyna and ex President of the GAA Liam O Neill have come out against the championship being played. Henry Sheflin possibly the greatest hurler of all time has said we should look into postponing the championship for a few weeks and then see what happens. None of them are Meath men. I think you statement is very very unfair.

The chief medical Officer also said that within the last week the situation is much worse then expected, the situation has deterioated much worse in the last few day then the models predicted. Things have really disimproved in the last week. To levels he wasnt expecting. They were expecting 1200 or 1300 cases a day by end of Oct last week now they think there could be up to 2500 cases a day by the end October meaning many more people in hospital.

There is massive issues in schools that is not being mentioned in the mainstream media. And students are getting effected from close contacts with gaa players who were involved in county finals. A School in kildare has 6 teachers with the virus and a number of students have the virus in the school and another school in a neighbouring town has two teachers with the virus along with a number of students in the school with covid. A school in longford has 9 teachers with the virus. 28 students in a Westmeath school have the virus, many more students are waiting on results in the school. That 28 number will increase in the coming days.I saw a study a month ago done in Canada saying 30 students in one classroom is five times more infectious then a classroom with 15 students. Of course we have some of the hightest students numbers in classes in Europe. One question why is the media not mentioning this whatsoever in any sort of detail? I think parents would like to know whats going on in schools. Deserve to know the truth about the virus in schools. No mention of this issue is a dreadful carry on. Remeber when cases broke out in meat factories and it was headline news. Now compare outbreaks in schools.

Tomorrow there is minor games and under 20 games across the country. The minor players who are 15 and 16 will travel to other counties in many cases and play the match and then return to secondary school on Monday. The Under 20 players wgo are 18 19 will travel to another county in many cases and play match and then return to third level college in many cases. Kerry senior players are going travel to Monaghan in cars on Sunday and 32 counties with panels of 30 will be criss crossing the country as we are on the verge of a national lockdown, and in the middle of the second wave of pandemic and according to chief medical officer while the country is on the verge of catastrophe and yet GAA thinks it the right to hold national competion at the height of national health crisis not seen in an hundred years to see who wins Sam Maguire or liam Mcarthy. GAA need to do the right things and holding a national championhip as covid cases are expoding and in many cases because of the GAA is definately not the right thing.

Things are worsening by the day at levels not expected, take for example the north is out control to such levels they even had to shutdown schools. That is meant places like first Donegal and Cavan have exploded. Part of Derry have the hightest numbers in The Uk and in western Europe currently. Inevitably this will lead to more hospitalisations ICU beds and peoples lifes lost. The cheif Medical Officer said last week he was very worried. Today The cheif medical officer said we r on the verge of catastrophe. Playing an All.Ireland champiomship when we are on the verge of national health catastrophe as cases explode across the island at the height of a second wave, is that looking after the welfare of the players and health of the nation. Gaelic football and hurling is not a matter of life and death, but I am afraid to say the coronavirus is a matter of life and death.

And on a personal level I look after two parents , my mother a great Meath women who gave me my passion for Meath football is 80 , my father who is 85 and a great west of Ireland man. Both parents are very sick and I am also sick. And I got two sisters who teach, in one school, one sisters school has shutdown and cases are linked back to county finals and my other sister her class has 4 students who have the virus and they got it from close contact with their brothers who played in county final very recently..She is terrified she could gwt it and give it to the parents I dont mean to be overdramatic. But this is the truth, this is my truth. yes I love the GAA, I love Meath football, but I love my family and my country more. I also believe in community looking after everyone who is suffering at this time. I know we are divided with many people having different opinions. We have to respect each others opinion even if they are different to ones we personally hold. And find solutions and have an action plan that will keep health system working and keeps people allve and keeps the economy alfloat. And people who are finding it tough mentally they need to be prioritised and supported as much as humanly possible. We need to take into account people whose business and lifelihoods and mental health are going through hell during this time. They all need to be supported eitheir finacially and with the correct support. We once balied out the banks in this country we now need to bail our people out. human beings and businesses who r suffering in this terrible period in our history. We are all suffering in our own way, many are worse then others but we are all suffering in some way in this shocking time. As Meath man yes I would love Meath to do well, but my families health and health of the nation is much more important. Games will come and go, we will have games in the future, but people healths is something much more serious and football is not matter of life and death. But i am afraid this coronvirus is a matter of life and death. There will be many GAA matchs in the future but for many who lost loved ones to the virus there future was taking away from them. We will overcome prevail its just the next while is going to be incredlbly tough.
Sorry again for my long winded attempts at posts. I dont seem to be able to do the snappy short posts, more essays then posts. I want to wish every single person on this forum and all their familes the best in these tough times. I might disagree with people and this place can be a bit mad at times, but for me its takes my mind of things and I have great time and respect for all the great gaels on Hogan stand.
Peace
