U20 Football Championship 2020

Refreshing to see the ball moved at pace, plenty of kick passing and lads willing to attempt a point from out the field. It was more entertaining than most of the senior games I have watched this year. The blanket defence and endless lateral hand passing was nowhere to be seen McKeon looks a real player for Dublin. Laois were physically strong and started brilliantly but ran out of steam.

Thats an odd statement a chara, some of the U 20s are involved with training with the seniors, its long been the case, while there is always a few involved when the senior championship comes around the Howards, Buglers, Con's POCB's Murch's just dont come from no where. We leave the alone for their championship certainly and dont flog them in the senior league but there is a clear and well trodden pathway between U20 and senior.. Its a particularly young group as it goes this year, 14 of the players who started last night are eligible again next year. Archer ages out.

Regardless of the win last night i was delighted with performance, really enjoy this team and they play the game the Dublin way. Scores throughout the team, lads running of the shoulder, supporting play, vision, individual skill, bravery, speed, physicality, creativity but battling and fighting. Some great scores tonight and you felt there was a few more gears in the team if required.

Last year we were over reliant on Archer this year we are for more a collective. A lot of players to be hopeful for. for the future, Archer, Lavin, McKeon, Swan an absolute beast and still so young, O Dell, Dwyer ad Murphy, the defense collectively i thought were brilliant.

Hoping for another good day out the next day regardless of how far we go in this and i m not to bothered on our chances of winning, as nice as it always is, we can be more then hopeful for many on this team, a really lovely and enjoyable team to watch.

Give it a rest for a while will you. Every time Dublin win, it's the GAA's fault. How about giving a bit of credit to all the lads who've put in a massive effort and played a very positive game last night.
How many of Laois's players have played senior this year? That's the reason they lost is it?
U20/U21 is actually the most competitive grade in male intercounty GAA. Kildare are the last Leinster team to win an All-Ireland at this grade. Cork hammered Dublin in last year's final. Kerry look very strong this year. We have two very talented teams going at it in Connacht this year.

Is this correct that 14 of the 15 that started are underage again next year? If it is it means those who were u17s in 2017 are either an extremely poor bunch or management have a set against them as it means only Archer from that year has started for the u20s as last year they were all on the age apart from Archer.

Dublin looked decent last night. Their full forward line of Archer, Swan and McKeon looks very good. Coffey number 10 for Laois was impressive as well.

No county in Leinster this year in U20 played without their senior players that I know of so thats a red herring. What the problem is of course is the structure of the competition and the time of year its played. U20 is the bridge between Minor and Senior where one of the biggest drop out levels in the games happens, yet all over the country and even at intercounty level its shoved into the worst parts of the year. If its the most competitive grade then it should be used as a development tool for weaker counties so that they are playing more competitive games and yes play it without players that are named in a senior championship side who by definition are already at a higher level. The Leinster minor football championship is a group league based competition why not the U20.

As a group they were very unlucky in the minor championship in 17 they had one bad result in the group and Wicklow I think it was and Meath conspired to make sure they didn't qualify, playing weakened teams against each other etc.

Last year we had some stand out individual players, but we weren't great from 8 back. POCB and Archer from last year will go on Doran and Ross might get a chance next year, James Madden was part of that group but went to Oz, who knows he might come back, he togged out for Boden over Xmas. Despite getting to the final last year we were more relying on three and four quality lads you'd have hoped for.

This year it seems to be more collective quality throughout, really impressed with this bunch regardless of how we do for the rest of the competition, I don't really mind in all honesty. U20 is always tough competitive grade to call results, perhaps the most unpredictable in the entire inter county game! Very easy to just be taken out i any given day, but it tends to be grade we ear mark as a crucial stage of development and nurture it

No I won't give it a rest as I am residing in Leinster and see first hand what is happening. I have spoken out about it on numerous occasions not just when Dublin win.

Good call. Galway 4-13 Roscommon 5 points.

In fairness Galway are very good but they also got a great start and it is hard for this age group from any county not to lose heart when the game is slipping away. Ross are better than they showed today.

Tough one to take on the chin we were beaten at half time in truth 5 points down having played with the wind. Writing was on the wall v Sligo very poor then v a poor side. Most disappointing thing is we didn't made Galway work hard for their scores and got four very soft goals from our poor defending.

Ah well always next year. All the best to Galway in the All Ireland series.

Well said our lads dropped heads very early got what they deserved for a performance so poor.
But your lads are a really good well organised side that if there beaten this year the Victor will need to be at there very best.
Only gripe that such a important competition is played in such terrible weather conditions that are expected for this time of year.

Maybe Dublin are just better. Is it not up to the other Leinster counties to improve their standards, and compete with Dublin.

Now this was a surprise. I would have expected the Rossies to have put up a better show. Are Galway really that good ? or was this a mediocre Roscommon team ? The early Galway goals seem to have knocked the stuffing out of this game as a competition. I feel for the young Roscommon lads, cos I don't think they are as bad as the scoreline reflects. And in the same vein I don't think Galway are as good as the scoreline would imply. Kerry in the semi's will be a different proposition, I think that this is going to deliver the eventual winners of the All Ireland final. Tyrone are going to drag Dublin down to their level and might just scrape a win, but the Kerry and/or Galway teams have way too much football for either Tyrone or Dublin.

However the format of the competition and playing these games in Feb/March is not helping to do that.

Well my Leitrim friend with yet another new username we were very mediocre yesterday. While Galway are very good afterall their minors the last two years didn't reach All Ireland finals by chance.

You are very foolish to write off Tyrone who are U17 All Ireland winners 2017 and Dublin who looked very strong Friday night will be hard bet.

The weather has been truly awful for this year's champions and its extremely difficult to develop underage players in conditions like that. For years the much better championship U21 was played March to April and don't recall the weather as bad as it's been this year.
