Yeah not many women attended the games back in the day.

The great Mattie McDonagh is well known as the only Connacht man to win 4 all-Ireland senior medals. His club, Ballygar, used to play their hurling in Roscommon and so Mattie ended up on the Roscommon minor hurling team and the Galway minor football team at the same time. He has the odd distinction of playing minor championship football for Galway against Roscommon and minor championship hurling for Roscommon against Galway in the same year. In the 1948 final Cavan (fresh from their polo grounds win the yet before) took a 3-2 to 0-0 half-time lead against Mayo in a gale force wind. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 10339 - 17/02/2020 10:40:10 2268099 Link 9 |
Tyrone used to have 2 County Boards; one for East Tyrone and one for West Tyrone. Terrible idea. essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 796 - 17/02/2020 11:56:27 2268118 Link 0 |
Is there any footage of this. There is some good footage available of the 1947 final.

The only neighbouring counties to compete against each other in both All Ireland Senior football and hurling finals are Galway and Offaly tommy58 (Dublin) - Posts: 167 - 17/02/2020 15:47:46 2268184 Link 1 |
A little known fact : Thurles has the distinction of being the town where the GAA was founded but the original intention was to hold that meeting in Loughrea Co. Galway. PoolSturgeon (Galway) - Posts: 1448 - 19/02/2020 11:10:18 2268415 Link 1 |

Another useless fact which might contradict the above. . A Wicklow team HAS won the all ireland title. It was commonplace, and almost always the case, back in the day for the county champions to represent their county in the provincial and all Ireland championship (no club all ireland back then). Bray Emmets entered the Dublin championship as Wicklow had no championship of their own at the time. They won the Dublin championship and went to win the all ireland as 'Dublin'. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 4135 - 19/02/2020 13:51:25 2268438 Link 3 |
That's actually not true. Laois and tipperary are neighbours and played each other in the 1889 football final and the 1949 hurling final.
