Reduce the number of subs allowed to 3 (as it traditionally used to be) would be a big help on 2 levels. Fewer subs allowed means smaller panel needed , and less expenditure needed, and secondly, it gives a boost to weaker counties and enables them be more competitive against the "big boys" as the gap in competitiveness widens the more deeply a team with limited playing resources/ available talent has to delve into their squad PoolSturgeon (Galway) - Posts: 1448 - 13/02/2020 20:31:49 2267577 Link 1 |
Reducing number of subs to be used in games doesnt help anyone. Standards would decrease if you did it as games would completely change if you cut numbers of subs that can be made in matches. You would still have similar squad sizes. Match day squads should still be smaller. 26 or similar is still more than should be used in any game. Reduce number of players that can be brought on maybe but have unlimited interchange between the players who are on bench. Counties would still keep these players on even if you reduced how many could play in a specific game. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 1636 - 13/02/2020 21:30:47 2267582 Link 0 |
Some BS draft will be drawn up to limit spending that will never be adhered to & a blind eye thrown to abuses of it & no regulation. moc.dna (Galway) - Posts: 1049 - 14/02/2020 02:17:41 2267601 Link 1 |
Who's driving all this spending? Its completely out of control. We can see it in clubs around the country even. Crazy sums being handed over to train teams. Someone hit the nail on the head when the mentioned the huge percentage of each counties money spent on county teams who account for a v small percentage of players. Absolute madness. old yellar (None) - Posts: 2624 - 14/02/2020 19:59:56 2267745 Link 0 |
Inter-County teams are basicially running two and half teams on panels. These are training panels, they are "sold" to players who will never play as a stepping stone, as a "means to an end". It's a form of abuse, it is dishonesty and it is destroying young impressionable players and when they see sense they walk from the game entirely and the County boards provide another crop of guillible young men. The GPA do not represent these ghost inter county players, the fact is these panels are inflated and cost too much for a sport which cannot sustain this. The club game is being decimated, young quality players leaving the game and maybe someone can point out the win win?

Some one on here telling it as it is. Players used as bench warmers, training fodder for the team that has any realistic chance of been picked. However the biggest loss is to the club games and inevitably to the sport. Again I say it the club game was always the development area for the county team. Now development squads are tying up too many players from their clubs. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. 23 panel team. You can only put 5 subs on anyway. Bring players up if required for injury etc. but not increase from 23. Salaries quoted for the big brass in Croke Park is outrageous. A smart move though drawing attention to the outrageous team costs. However non of those entertainers (players) are getting a monthly salary cheques. The bubble will bust.
